Michael “P.S.” Hayes is best known as a professional wrestler and a founding member of the Fabulous Freebirds. The group helped change tag-team wrestling with a flexible three-person lineup—and made its entrance music part of its identity.
The Fabulous Freebirds began as a trio
WWE identifies Hayes, Terry “Bam Bam” Gordy and Buddy “Jack” Roberts as the three wrestlers who formed the Fabulous Freebirds in 1979. That original lineup is important to understanding the group’s best-known innovation: its members did not have to compete as one fixed pair.
WWE’s profile of the Fabulous Freebirds recounts the group’s history and career achievements.
The Freebird Rule let members rotate in title defenses
Rather than limiting championship defenses to the exact two wrestlers who had won the belts, the Freebird Rule allowed any two members of the trio to defend the team’s tag titles. It gave the group room to change pairings while keeping the championship team identity intact.

The idea outlasted the Freebirds. WWE notes that groups including Demolition, the nWo Wolfpac and The New Day later used the rule. This is a team innovation associated with the group, not a title accomplishment belonging to Hayes alone.
Hayes recorded the group’s signature entrance song
The Freebirds initially used Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” as entrance music. WWE credits Hayes with recording “Badstreet, U.S.A.,” the group’s original signature song, and describes it as helping pioneer original entrance themes for wrestlers. The music gave the trio a distinct presentation beyond its matches.

The Von Erich rivalry defined a major chapter
The Freebirds’ rivalry with the Von Erich family was a defining period in the group’s Texas wrestling history, according to WWE’s Hall of Fame account. The feud is best understood as part of the Freebirds’ collective legacy rather than as a solo Hayes accomplishment.

The group’s record and Hall of Fame recognition
WWE lists six WCCW Six-Man Tag Team Championship reigns for the Fabulous Freebirds. That figure is the group’s career record; it should not be read as six titles won by Hayes individually.
The Fabulous Freebirds entered the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016. Ceremony coverage featured Hayes and Jimmy Garvin and remembered fellow members Gordy and Roberts. The recognition honored the group’s place in wrestling history, including its flexible team format, memorable presentation and lasting influence.
