Three films with very different approaches
A Minecraft Movie: block-building turned into live-action comedy
Jared Hess directed this live-action adaptation, with Jason Momoa and Jack Black among its stars. Its April 2 international start and April 4 North American release were separate territory-specific dates, rather than one universal opening day. The official film site later listed digital, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD availability, so the original theatrical window is now part of the film’s release history rather than an upcoming date.
Until Dawn: a fresh story in the game’s world
The Until Dawn movie was not presented as a scene-by-scene adaptation. PlayStation said it features fresh characters and an original story set in the same world as the game, carrying over its interest in branching choices and deadly consequences. That makes it a horror film using the game’s premise and atmosphere while giving viewers a different set of characters and events.
#1 Best Overall
- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
Peter Stormare, who played Dr. Hill in the game, described the film as “a love letter to horror” that “completely honors the spirit of the game,” while emphasizing its “fresh characters and victims in a brand-new story, loaded with twists.” The full statement and the announcement are in PlayStation’s January 16, 2025 post. Sony’s movie page lists 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and digital formats.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2: a horror-game sequel
Unlike Until Dawn’s new-story approach, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 follows the game franchise’s existing adaptation into a sequel film. Blumhouse identified it as based on Scott Cawthon’s game series and gave December 5, 2025 as its release date. The current Blumhouse film page and Universal Pictures At Home page provide the film information and list DVD and 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray collections.

Returning game-based series in 2025
Fallout Season 2
Amazon confirmed that the second season of Fallout would premiere in December 2025. Its announcement points the story through the Mojave toward New Vegas and describes the series as derived from the game. That makes it a continuation of an established game adaptation, rather than a one-off film retelling. See About Amazon’s announcement for the season details.
The Last of Us and Twisted Metal Season 2
A January 2026 Rotten Tomatoes retrospective also names The Last of Us and Twisted Metal among video game adaptations with second seasons in 2025. Those examples show that the year’s game-related television was not limited to new premieres: established adaptations also continued. The cited retrospective is a secondary overview, so these titles should be read as examples, not a complete slate.
