Actor Miriam Margolyes, who played Professor Pomona Sprout in the Harry Potter films, said she worries about adults who remain fans of the series, arguing that it is children’s entertainment. Her remark was a personal opinion, not evidence that adult fandom is harmful or unusual; fellow cast member Jessie Cave offered a contrasting view, describing the franchise as a community shared across generations.

What did Miriam Margolyes say about Harry Potter fans?

In a 2024 interview with New Zealand broadcaster 1News, as reported by ComicBook.com, Margolyes said: “I worry about Harry Potter fans because they should be over that by now.” She continued: “It was 25 years ago, and it’s for children. I think it’s for children.”

The “25 years ago” wording is Margolyes’s own framing in that interview, not a separately calculated age for the books or films. She also recounted receiving Cameo requests from adults planning Harry Potter-themed weddings. That anecdote illustrates the kinds of requests she said she gets; it does not establish how common such weddings or adult fandom are.

Why does Margolyes think adults should move on?

Her stated reason was that she regards Harry Potter as a series for children and believes adults should have moved on from it. That is her judgment about how people relate to the franchise, rather than a factual conclusion about fans or a claim that enjoying the books and films is unhealthy.

Her comments are also not simply a rejection of the films. In a later interview with ABC News Australia, Margolyes again called the franchise children’s entertainment, while describing the films as wonderful and saying she was proud to have been part of them. ABC News Australia reported her follow-up remarks.

How did Jessie Cave respond?

Jessie Cave, who played Lavender Brown, defended adult fans after Margolyes’s comments circulated. Cave described the series as having created a community whose members have grown older together and passed the books and films on to younger generations. This is Cave’s perspective on the franchise’s appeal, not a measured description of every fan. Her response offers a different way to understand lasting interest: for some people, the series is not only children’s entertainment but also a shared cultural connection. The Independent reported Cave’s response.
