The clips are funny and unsettling for the same reason: they look just coherent enough for you to notice when reality starts falling apart.
What the “nightmare fuel” videos are
These are not scenes from a single film or a controlled test of one video generator. They are a collection of strange clips, presented as AI-generated experiments, that BGR’s Joshua Hawkins found through r/aivideo. The original article appeared on July 13, 2024, during an early wave of consumer AI-video tools. It is an entertaining snapshot of that moment, not a current benchmark of what video generators can do.
The roundup discusses Luma’s Dream Machine and the then-anticipated Sora as part of the surrounding conversation. That does not establish that Luma made every clip, or that the examples came from one model. The article describes videos gathered from various sources; a tool attribution should be treated as confirmed only when the creator or original post identifies it. Read the original BGR roundup.
What happens in the featured clips
The BGR article describes several examples, but social posts and embedded videos can be deleted, restricted, replaced, or reposted. The descriptions below reflect what the article reports; they are not a guarantee that each original clip remains playable or that its uploader was its creator.

Dancers who merge into one another
A dance scene starts with a familiar premise, then bodies appear to blend together. The unsettling part is the clash between recognizable human movement and the loss of clear boundaries between people.
A gymnast whose body comes apart
In another example, a gymnast’s form intermittently collapses into disconnected limbs. Gymnastics depends on viewers being able to follow a body through a precise sequence; when the body’s shape stops holding together, the motion becomes both absurd and disturbing.
“Cooking with Auntie”
The roundup also points to a cooking-themed clip called “Cooking with Auntie.” A domestic activity gives viewers an ordinary frame of reference, making any shift in bodies, objects, or actions feel especially jarring. The BGR account does not establish a specific generator for this clip.

A surreal movie trailer
A trailer-style video borrows the recognizable language of cinematic promotion but lets its imagery drift into surreal territory. The effect is less like a conventional plot twist than watching a sequence struggle to maintain a stable world.

A T-1000-like character using a smartphone
One clip features a character likened to the T-1000 using a smartphone. The familiar science-fiction image meeting a mundane device is an example of the internet’s taste for incongruous mash-ups as much as it is an example of visual instability.
Why AI video can look glitchy
“Glitchy” is a casual description, not a diagnosis. A strange-looking clip might involve generation artifacts, editing, compression, or a combination of techniques. Without a verified source and production account, it is not possible to identify the cause of a particular distortion just by watching it.

Several common visual failure modes help explain why generated clips can feel unstable:
- Temporal inconsistency: A feature that looks plausible in one frame may change shape or position in the next, so a person or object fails to remain consistent over time.
- Identity drift: A face, body, or character can gradually take on different features, making it hard to tell whether the same subject is still present.
- Anatomical instability: Hands, limbs, joints, teeth, and facial features can deform or change as a sequence unfolds.
- Object permanence problems: Props may appear, vanish, merge, or seem to change what they are used for.
- Unclear motion: Individual images may look plausible while the movement between them fails to form a physically consistent action.
- Competing instructions: A prompt that asks for many subjects, actions, or transformations can leave more opportunities for the sequence to become visually confused. This is a general risk, not a verified explanation for any one clip in the roundup.
These descriptions concern visible results; they do not reveal a model’s internal reasoning. A viewer can identify that a hand changed shape, for example, without knowing which part of the generation or editing process caused it.

Why the mistakes are funny and frightening
The clips sit between horror imagery and accidental comedy. A viewer recognizes a dance, a gymnastics routine, or a cooking show, then sees the scene violate the physical rules that made it legible. The intended activity remains just clear enough for the failure to land as a joke—and just wrong enough to feel uncanny.

That tension is part of the appeal of the uncanny valley: something resembles a person or familiar scene, but small inconsistencies make the resemblance uncomfortable rather than reassuring. The viewer also gets a strange suspense loop: will the next moment restore the scene, or make it stranger? In a short clip, every new frame can deliver another surprise.
There is a broader internet-horror pleasure in seeing imitation come close without settling into reality. These videos are not evidence that a system understands a body, a recipe, or a story. They show what happens when an image sequence can suggest those things while failing to keep them stable.

The original roundup placed the clips in the context of Luma Dream Machine and expressed hope that OpenAI’s then-upcoming Sora would produce more coherent results. That was a forward-looking remark in July 2024, not a present-day comparison or proof that a later system solved the problems shown.

Luma’s product pages and plans have changed since that early consumer-video moment. Its current Dream Machine page, pricing page, and Dream Machine support information describe current offerings, not the exact product context in the 2024 article. None of those pages identifies the generator behind every clip in the roundup.
Finding and sharing clips responsibly
Reddit is a place where clips may be shared, not proof that the person posting them created or owns them. A repost can omit the original creator, the tool used, or whether footage was generated from scratch, transformed from existing video, or assembled through editing. Treat those details as unknown unless the source confirms them.
- Follow a post back to its creator where possible, and preserve the distinction between creator, uploader, editor, and publication.
- Do not assume that a public post is public-domain material or that it can be downloaded, mirrored, or reused without permission.
- Be cautious with recognizable real people, copyrighted characters, and vulnerable subjects. A clip that looks like a joke can still mislead viewers or cause harm when detached from its context.
- Use a content warning when a clip contains realistic injury, violence, or disturbing body imagery; choose thumbnails and captions that do not spring graphic material on viewers.
- If the original post is gone or attribution cannot be checked, describe the uncertainty rather than presenting a repost as verified footage.
For more examples, the community trail begins at r/aivideo, but the presence or availability of any individual post can change over time.
The appeal is in watching visual logic fail
The clips remain memorable because they turn everyday scenes into unstable ones. A dancer, gymnast, cook, or familiar fictional figure gives the viewer a foothold; shifting bodies and objects pull it away. That mixture of recognition, surprise, and unease is what makes these AI-video oddities feel less like polished demonstrations and more like tiny accidental nightmares.
