Burberry’s signature pieces tell three different stories: the trench coat began as protective outerwear, the Check grew from a raincoat lining into a defining pattern, and the Equestrian Knight Design became the house emblem. Burberry does not publish an official ranking of its most iconic designs, so “iconic” here describes the pieces most clearly rooted in the brand’s documented history.
At a glance: Burberry’s signature pieces
| Piece | What it is | How it became a Burberry signature |
|---|---|---|
| Trench coat | Weather-ready outerwear | Developed around gabardine and military-inspired details that remain recognizable in the design. |
| Burberry Check cashmere scarf | A patterned cashmere accessory | The Check began as raincoat lining in the 1920s; the scarf arrived in the 1970s. |
| Equestrian Knight Design (EKD) | A house emblem, not a garment | Its origins date to a public competition circa 1901. |
The trench coat: practical protection becomes an icon
Burberry’s story begins in Basingstoke in 1856. In 1879, founder Thomas Burberry invented gabardine, a fabric the company describes as an open, reticular weave designed to be breathable while repelling the elements. That connection between textile innovation and weather protection helps explain why the trench is more than a familiar silhouette: it represents the practical origins of the brand. Burberry describes the trench as a global fashion icon and a wardrobe staple for over a century. (Burberry plc history; Burberry’s trench coat history; Burberry plc, “Unmistakably Burberry”)
Why its details are recognizable
Burberry says the trench was developed for military use during the First World War. Details including epaulettes, D-rings, a storm shield and a gun flap served functional purposes; together with the belt, they became part of the coat’s enduring visual identity. The design therefore reflects both its origins in practical outerwear and the way those functional features came to define a fashion classic. Heritage trench styles today
Burberry’s heritage page names the Kensington and Waterloo as current trench cuts and says its Heritage Trench coats are made in Yorkshire. The brand also identifies the belt, epaulettes and Check lining among the coats’ features. Those names establish available heritage styles, not a comparison of fit or performance. The Burberry Check scarf: from lining to signature pattern
The Check began inside the coat. Burberry dates its first use as raincoat lining to the 1920s. In 1967, according to the company, a buyer at its Paris store used the lining to wrap luggage and make an umbrella cover. Burberry identifies that moment as the start of Check accessories—a pattern moving from a hidden functional detail to something meant to be seen. When did the Check cashmere scarf come out?
Burberry dates the introduction of its Check cashmere scarf to the 1970s and describes it as one of the house’s best-known accessories. The company’s UK heritage page says the scarves are woven on traditional looms at a Scottish mill. The scarf’s appeal as a signature is tied to the pattern’s earlier history: the Check had already traveled from raincoat lining into visible accessories. The Equestrian Knight Design: what the Burberry emblem means
The Equestrian Knight Design is Burberry’s house emblem, rather than a coat or scarf. The company dates the original design to a public competition circa 1901. In Burberry’s explanation, the knight represents honour, the lance reform, and the shield protection; the banner’s Latin word “Prorsum” means “Forwards.” These meanings connect the emblem to the values Burberry chose to express through its early visual identity. | Signature | Role | Historical starting point | What it says about Burberry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trench coat | Protective outerwear | Gabardine, invented in 1879; trench developed for military use during the First World War. | Weather protection and functional design. |
| Check scarf | Cashmere accessory | Check first used to line raincoats in the 1920s; the scarf introduced in the 1970s. | A practical lining became a visible pattern and recognizable accessory. |
| Equestrian Knight Design | Brand emblem | Public competition circa 1901. | A symbolic identity built around honour, reform, protection and progress. |
Together, the trench, Check and EKD offer three distinct ways to understand Burberry’s identity: a garment shaped by weather and utility, a pattern that moved from inside a coat to the surface of an accessory, and an emblem that carries the brand’s chosen symbolism. The dates and meanings above are Burberry’s own historical accounts, rather than an independent ranking of which design is most iconic.
