Theranos documentaries compared: which one best explains the scandal?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley (HBO, 2019). Alex Gibney’s 1-hour-59-minute feature gives the clearest single explanation of Theranos’s rise, its blood-testing claims and the collapse that followed. Then watch ABC’s The Dropout (the 2019 20/20 documentary) for deposition material, reporting interviews and more detail about how testing was conducted. For the fullest chronology, use John Carreyrou’s book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup as a companion.

The films are complementary rather than interchangeable: The Inventor is the stronger orientation, while The Dropout is the more reporting-centered examination of evidence and process.

Quick verdict: The Inventor vs. The Dropout

Documentary Format and provenance What it does best Main limitation Best for
The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley HBO documentary directed by Alex Gibney; 2019; Apple TV lists a runtime of 1 hour 59 minutes. A coherent, feature-length narrative of Theranos’s rise, claims and collapse, using interviews, company imagery and chronology. A contemporary Time review says it does not fully connect Elizabeth Holmes’s rise to privilege and wider institutional factors. First-time viewers who want one clear account in a single sitting.
The Dropout (ABC News/20/20) Two-hour ABC documentary announced for March 15, 2019, built from Rebecca Jarvis’s reporting. Deposition material, reporting subjects and evidence about the testing operation, including the Walgreens rollout and use of third-party analyzers. Time describes it as shorter and more abbreviated than the related six-episode podcast, with some interviews compressed. Viewers who want journalistic sourcing and the mechanics of how the investigation developed.
Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup John Carreyrou’s written investigation; not a documentary. The most expansive chronology and a deeper companion after the films. It requires reading rather than watching and is not a visual treatment. Anyone who wants the fullest written account after viewing.

Why The Inventor is the best first watch

The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley is designed to orient a newcomer quickly. Its feature-length running time gives Gibney room to establish Theranos as a company, show how its public story was built, and then trace the contradiction between that story and the company’s testing practices. The result is a chronological explanation rather than a collection of isolated revelations.

The film’s advantage is synthesis. Interviews, archival material and company imagery are arranged so that the viewer can follow the sequence from promise to expansion to exposure. That structure matters because the scandal was not one event. It involved a technology claim, a business rollout, investor and board decisions, patient testing and later scrutiny. A film that explains only the final allegations can leave a first-time viewer unsure about how the pieces fit. The Inventor supplies that map.

What the film explains clearly

  • How Theranos presented itself as a company that could transform blood testing.
  • How the company’s public profile and valuation grew before the claims were fully challenged.
  • How the story moved from celebrated innovation to a collapse requiring closer examination of the testing operation.
  • Why the controversy is about more than a failed product: it is also about communication, oversight and institutional confidence.

ABC’s official description put Theranos’s peak valuation at almost $10 billion. The Inventor makes that scale legible by showing the company’s rise as a public narrative, not merely listing a number. The viewer sees why the claims attracted attention and why the eventual contradictions had such broad consequences.

Where The Inventor leaves questions open

The film is efficient, and that efficiency is also its principal limitation. A contemporary Time review argued that it does not fully connect Holmes’s rise to privilege and the institutional conditions that helped the company gain credibility. In practical terms, the documentary is stronger at answering “What happened?” than at exhaustively answering “Why did investors, directors, partners and regulators accept the story for so long?”

That does not make the film incomplete as an introduction. It tells a first-time viewer where to look next. If you want a detailed account of the reporting process, the documentary evidence gathered in depositions and the mechanics of the tests used in stores, follow it with The Dropout.

What ABC’s The Dropout adds

ABC’s The Dropout is the 2019 20/20 documentary built from Rebecca Jarvis’s reporting. It is separate from Hulu’s later scripted miniseries with the same title: ABC’s program is nonfiction, while the Hulu production dramatizes events. That distinction is important when searching for the documentary or evaluating what counts as evidence.

Evidence rather than overview

The ABC film puts more weight on reporting subjects, deposition material and details tied to the investigation. Instead of relying primarily on a polished rise-and-fall arc, it gives viewers more of the documentary trail behind the allegations. This makes it particularly useful after The Inventor, whose broad chronology can leave viewers wanting to see how specific claims were tested and challenged.

ABC reported that more than 40 Theranos Wellness Centers operated inside Walgreens stores in California and Arizona between 2013 and 2015. The same reporting said Theranos used analyzers made by third-party manufacturers, including Siemens, for much of its testing. Those details are central to understanding the gap between the company’s public image of a fully proprietary system and the equipment used in practice. The Dropout is the better of the two documentaries for following that operational question.

Why its broadcast format can feel compressed

ABC announced a two-hour 20/20 documentary for March 15, 2019. Time characterized the film as shorter and more abbreviated than the related six-episode podcast, noting that some interviews are presented in compressed form. A two-hour broadcast can establish the key evidence, but it cannot give every witness, document or technical issue the same space as a longer series or a book.

That pacing makes The Dropout less self-sufficient for someone who knows nothing about Theranos. It assumes that the viewer can absorb a large amount of reporting context quickly. As a second watch, however, its concentration is useful: you already know the broad sequence, so the deposition excerpts and testing details sharpen the points that matter.

Which documentary explains the technology claims better?

Choose The Dropout if your main question is how Theranos’s testing operation worked in practice. ABC’s reporting identifies two concrete facts: the company had more than 40 Walgreens wellness centers in California and Arizona during 2013–2015, and much testing used analyzers from established third-party manufacturers such as Siemens. Those facts give the viewer a way to evaluate the company’s claims against its actual deployment.

Choose The Inventor if you first need to understand why the technology story persuaded so many people. The film places the claims inside the larger rise of the company, showing how branding, secrecy, celebrity support and business momentum shaped perception. It is less a technical audit than a visual explanation of how the promise became influential.

Neither documentary should be treated as a laboratory validation study. They are journalistic films explaining a corporate and medical-testing controversy. Their value is in showing claims, testimony, documents and consequences in context; they do not substitute for clinical guidance or an independent technical report.

Which has stronger primary evidence?

The Dropout: deposition and reporting trail

The ABC documentary has the edge when “primary evidence” means deposition material and interviews directly connected to the investigation. Its reporting focus helps viewers distinguish between what a source said, what a document recorded and what the program’s narration infers. That is especially useful for viewers who want to understand how the story was assembled rather than only its final verdict.

The Inventor: visual and archival context

The Inventor uses company imagery and interviews to create a fuller visual context. It shows how Theranos presented itself and how that presentation changed as scrutiny increased. Its evidence is integrated into a narrative designed for comprehension, so individual documents may receive less sustained attention than they would in a reporting-led program.

If you are comparing the films on evidentiary purpose rather than declaring one universally superior, the distinction is straightforward: The Dropout foregrounds the investigation, while The Inventor foregrounds the story’s overall structure.

Whistleblowers, employees and the human perspective

A useful comparison question is not simply whether a film includes critics of Theranos, but whether it explains their position and the risks of speaking. The two documentaries approach that task through different formats. The Inventor places internal criticism inside the rise-and-collapse narrative, helping a general audience understand when and why doubts became consequential. The Dropout gives more room to reporting interviews and deposition-linked material, which can make individual accounts feel closer to the investigative record.

Because the ABC program is more abbreviated than its six-episode podcast counterpart, some interviews are compressed. Viewers seeking the fullest employee chronology should therefore use the documentaries as visual starting points and turn to Carreyrou’s Bad Blood for a longer written account.

Does either film explain the role of investors, directors and regulators?

The Inventor raises the institutional question but does not fully develop the relationship between Holmes’s rise, privilege and the systems that granted Theranos credibility; that is the specific limitation identified by Time. Its purpose is to make the entire scandal understandable in one feature, so institutional analysis competes with chronology.

The Dropout supplies more reporting context around how claims were examined, but its broadcast length also limits how far it can pursue every investor, board and regulatory decision. If institutional accountability is your central interest, watch both films and read Bad Blood rather than expecting either two-hour treatment to answer every governance question.

What the two documentaries establish about scale

The numbers are useful only when attached to their dates and source. ABC News reported that Theranos reached an almost $10 billion valuation at its peak. ABC also reported that more than 40 Theranos Wellness Centers operated in California and Arizona between 2013 and 2015. Those figures show why the scandal affected more than a small startup: the company’s claims were connected to a public-facing testing rollout inside a major retail setting.

The Walgreens detail is particularly important for viewing. It turns an abstract technology promise into a service that ordinary customers could encounter. The analyzer detail then creates the operational question at the heart of the documentaries: how did the equipment actually used for much of the testing relate to the image of a proprietary system? The Dropout spends more time on that question; The Inventor makes the surrounding rise and collapse easier to follow.

Recommended viewing order

  1. Watch The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley. Use its 1-hour-59-minute feature structure to learn the chronology, the public claims and the basic shape of the collapse.
  2. Watch ABC’s The Dropout. Treat it as an evidence-focused second pass, paying attention to deposition material, reporting interviews, the Walgreens centers and the use of third-party analyzers.
  3. Read Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup. John Carreyrou’s book is the deeper companion for readers who want a more expansive chronology than either film can provide.

This order prevents a common viewing problem: beginning with isolated testimony before understanding where it sits in the company’s timeline. The first film supplies the map; the second adds investigative detail; the book fills in the written record.

Which documentary should you choose?

Your priority Best choice Reason
You have never studied the Theranos story. The Inventor Its feature-length chronological structure is the clearest orientation.
You want deposition material and reporting interviews. The Dropout ABC’s treatment is built from Rebecca Jarvis’s reporting and emphasizes documentary evidence.
You want to understand the testing operation and store rollout. The Dropout, after The Inventor ABC reports the more than 40 Walgreens centers and use of third-party analyzers for much testing.
You want the broadest written chronology. Bad Blood Carreyrou’s book is the most expansive companion named in these treatments.
You want a single evening watch. The Inventor Apple TV lists a runtime of 1 hour 59 minutes.
You want a dramatized retelling. That is not either documentary. Hulu’s later The Dropout is a scripted miniseries, not ABC’s nonfiction 20/20 program.

Availability and edition notes

Streaming rights change by country and over time. HBO, Apple TV and other platform listings can differ by territory, and a title’s presence on a service is not permanent. Check the current listing in your country before planning a watch party or assuming that a subscription includes the film.

The format labels also matter. The Inventor is the 2019 HBO documentary directed by Alex Gibney. The Dropout in this comparison is ABC News’s 2019 20/20 documentary announced for March 15, 2019. It should not be confused with the later Hulu scripted miniseries, which uses dramatization rather than functioning as a documentary.

Common mistakes when comparing Theranos documentaries

  • Judging only by runtime. The nearly two-hour length of The Inventor does not make it automatically more detailed; its strength is narrative coherence. ABC’s shorter, more compressed treatment can still add evidence the feature does not emphasize.
  • Treating a promotional synopsis as criticism. Platform copy may describe The Inventor as a “riveting look” at Theranos and Holmes. That is a catalog description, not an independent assessment of accuracy or completeness.
  • Assuming one film answers every institutional question. The role of privilege, investors, board members and regulators needs more analysis than either broadcast-length documentary can supply.
  • Confusing nonfiction with scripted drama. Search results for “The Dropout” can mix ABC’s documentary with Hulu’s dramatized series. Verify the network, format and year.
  • Reading the valuation as proof of technical success. The almost $10 billion figure describes the company’s peak valuation reported by ABC; it does not establish that the blood-testing claims worked.

Final recommendation

For the question “which Theranos documentary is best?”, the answer is The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley as a first watch. It offers the clearest all-in-one explanation of the scandal and gives a newcomer enough chronology to understand why the later evidence mattered. The Dropout is the better follow-up when you want deposition-led reporting, interview context and concrete details about the Walgreens rollout and analyzers used in testing. Add Bad Blood when you need the fullest written chronology rather than another abbreviated screen treatment.
