What is Thelma (2024) about?
Thelma follows Thelma Post, a 93-year-old woman living alone in Los Angeles who is tricked by a phone scammer impersonating her grandson. After sending $10,000 to what she believes is an emergency contact, Thelma discovers that her grandson is safe and the money is gone.
When her family and the police cannot recover it, Thelma decides to pursue the scammers herself. She recruits Ben, an older friend played by Richard Roundtree, and sets off across Los Angeles on his mobility scooter.
The premise sounds like a conventional revenge thriller, but the film translates action-movie obstacles into the physical and social realities of later life. Stairs, computers, transportation, unfamiliar technology, fatigue, and relatives who insist on taking over become the equivalent of elaborate spy-movie set pieces. The result is a warm, low-key action comedy about a woman fighting not only criminals but also the assumption that she is no longer capable of making her own decisions.
This is the 2024 American independent film by Josh Margolin—not Joachim Trier’s Norwegian supernatural drama Thelma (2017), Netflix’s animated musical Thelma the Unicorn (2024), or Thelma & Louise.

Is Thelma based on a true story?
Thelma is inspired by a real family incident, but it is not a literal true-story account.
Margolin’s real grandmother—also named Thelma—was nearly deceived by scammers pretending to be him and asking for money in connection with a fabricated emergency. The family intervened before the scam was completed. Margolin then imagined what might have happened if his grandmother had decided to track down the criminals herself.

It is therefore more accurate to call the film “inspired by a scam attempt involving Margolin’s grandmother” than to describe it as a true-crime film or direct dramatization. Margolin discusses the incident and the film’s development in this Sundance interview.
Why June Squibb’s performance matters
Thelma was June Squibb’s first leading film role after a career spanning more than seven decades. She had long been celebrated as a supporting and character actor, including an Oscar-nominated performance in Nebraska, but this film builds its entire perspective around her.
Squibb’s performance works because Thelma is not presented as a magically ageless action hero. She is physically limited, cautious in some situations, lonely, and unused to modern technology. Yet none of those qualities automatically cancel her judgment. The joke is not simply that an old woman is doing things normally associated with action stars; it is that everyone around her keeps underestimating what she can still choose, attempt, and accomplish.
The production emphasized Squibb’s physical commitment. She performed many or most of her own stunts, including scooter work and physical comedy, but she did not perform every stunt. Heidi Pascoe is credited as her stunt double, and publicity specifically distinguishes Squibb’s work from more dangerous or technically specialized material, including the scooter wheelie. The accurate description is that Squibb performed many of her own stunts—not that she did all of them.
Thelma and Danny: love, dependence, and role reversal
Thelma and Danny clearly love each other, but their relationship is strained by unequal dependence. Danny helps her navigate technology and everyday tasks. Thelma experiences that assistance affectionately at times, but also as evidence that he sees her as incapable.
The film reverses the familiar caregiver arrangement. The younger relative is affectionate but directionless, while the grandmother undertakes the dangerous mission and becomes the person who provides practical and emotional guidance. Danny helps Thelma remotely with the computer and bank transfer, but Thelma’s journey also teaches him courage, responsibility, and how to confront grief.
This is why the film’s conflict is larger than recovering money. Thelma wants her family to recognize that care should be reciprocal. Keeping someone safe should not require quietly taking away that person’s authority.
Main themes
Aging and agency
Thelma’s family has legitimate reasons to worry about her safety. The film does not say that every concern about an older person is prejudice. Instead, it asks when protection becomes control. The central question is whether Thelma is still allowed to choose a difficult or risky course of action, even when the people who love her believe they know better.

Family care versus family overprotection
The family’s instinct is to simplify Thelma’s life by making decisions for her. That instinct is understandable, but the movie shows how quickly it can become a form of social disappearance. Being helped with a computer is not the same as being unable to think; needing assistance with transportation is not the same as losing the right to decide where to go.
Intergenerational care
Care moves in both directions. Danny teaches Thelma how to use technology, while Thelma shows Danny how to act when fear and grief have made him passive. The film’s emotional resolution depends on both generations accepting that dependence is not a one-way relationship.
Loneliness, grief, and social disappearance
Thelma’s search for help reveals how much of her social world has changed through death, relocation, and institutionalization. This is used as a comic obstacle—old contacts are difficult to reach or no longer able to help—but it also gives the film its sadness. Her mission is partly a response to the loss of her husband and to the fear that life is narrowing around her.
Ben’s presence is especially important. Thelma had been avoiding him after her husband’s death, but reconnecting with him lets the story move from isolation toward companionship. The action plot gives her a reason to re-enter a world she had begun to leave behind.
Grandparent scams
The fraud in the film resembles a real “grandparent scam” or family-emergency scam: an impostor creates panic, impersonates a loved one, and demands immediate payment before the victim has time to verify the story. The movie uses that recognizable mechanism to launch its adventure without becoming a public-service documentary.
The scam also exposes an uncomfortable contradiction. Thelma is vulnerable because she trusts her family and is anxious about failing them, but the film refuses to equate being deceived with lacking intelligence or cognitive capacity.
Mortality without erasure
Thelma’s mission is a way to reclaim a sense of self after bereavement. By the end, the movie shifts from revenge toward acceptance: aging and mortality are unavoidable, but they do not make the remaining years meaningless. The film’s optimism comes from preserving agency and connection, not from pretending that decline does not exist.
Why the Mission: Impossible comparison works
Margolin deliberately adapts the grammar of the “one last job” and impossible-mission story. The film includes pursuit, surveillance, improvisation, a computer-based recovery operation, a criminal mastermind, a final confrontation, and constant attention to mobility and timing.

But Thelma is better understood as a warm genre translation than as a parody of Mission: Impossible. A blockbuster hero might scale a skyscraper; Thelma has to negotiate a bed, stairs, a scooter, a computer, and other people’s assumptions. The scale is smaller, but the obstacles are no less real to her.
That contrast produces both the comedy and the pathos. Ordinary tasks become cinematic because the film takes Thelma’s lived experience seriously.
Where was Thelma filmed?
The film is set in Los Angeles, but its geography is emotional as much as touristic. The city becomes a sprawling obstacle course in which familiar places are increasingly difficult to navigate.

Thelma ending explained — spoilers
Do not read this section if you want to watch the film unspoiled.
After the scammer impersonating Danny takes $10,000, Thelma confirms that Danny is safe but refuses to accept that the money is unrecoverable. Her attempts to seek help from old acquaintances also show how isolated her world has become. She eventually reconnects with Ben, who joins her on the recovery mission.
The pair follow the person who retrieves the money to an antique store. There Thelma discovers that Harvey and his grandson Michael are behind the scam. Harvey justifies the crimes by pointing to his failing business and financial problems, but his explanation functions as rationalization rather than redemption.
Thelma initially appears ready to back down. She then produces a gun borrowed from Mona and takes control of the confrontation. Ben helps contain the attempted escape, while Danny assists Thelma remotely with the computer and bank transfer. Thelma recovers most of the money, leaves Harvey $500, and destroys the computer used in the scam.

Thelma’s victory is therefore not just financial. She forces the criminals’ supposed family structure to reveal its exploitation and hypocrisy.
The final movement of the film is deliberately gentler. Thelma reunites with her family, watches Ben perform in a nursing-home play, and visits her husband’s graveside with Danny. She reassures Danny that he will be able to manage after she is gone.
In the car, they discuss trees and their ability to persist despite gnarled roots. The image suggests that survival does not require remaining untouched. A life can be bent by grief, age, and loss while still continuing to grow.
A mid-credits scene shows Margolin having a similar conversation with his real grandmother. That moment reconnects the fictional revenge adventure to the family incident that inspired it and makes clear that the film’s deepest subject is not defeating scammers. It is recognizing an older person as a complete person whose life remains active, complex, and self-directed.

The ending does not argue that older people should ignore safety concerns. It argues that safety and autonomy are not identical, and that caring for someone should not automatically mean replacing that person’s judgment.
Reviews and critical reception
As checked on August 10, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes lists Thelma at 98% from 208 critics and an 83% verified audience score. Metacritic lists a 77/100 critic score based on 42 reviews. These figures can change as databases update their review and audience totals.
Positive reviews commonly praise Squibb’s charisma and comic timing, her chemistry with Roundtree, the film’s warmth, its unusual older protagonist, and its accessible balance of sentiment and action-comedy mechanics. The National Board of Review included it among its Top 10 Independent Films of 2024.
The reservations are equally useful for setting expectations. Some critics find the plot predictable, the emotional messaging obvious, and the scam-revenge structure more charming than procedurally realistic. Several supporting characters primarily serve Thelma’s arc rather than receiving equally developed storylines. The high Rotten Tomatoes score reflects broad critical approval, not universal agreement that the film is a complex crime thriller.
Awards and recognition
Notable verified recognition includes:
- National Board of Review: one of the Top 10 Independent Films of 2024.
- Critics Choice Super Awards: June Squibb won Best Actress in an Action Movie.
- Alliance of Women Film Journalists: Squibb won the EDA Female Focus Award for Best Stunt Performance.
- North Carolina Film Critics Association: Josh Margolin won Best Directorial Debut.
The film also received additional festival and critics-group nominations and audience awards. Because those honors include many regional organizations, it is more informative to distinguish major wins, festival recognition, and nominations than to treat every listing as equivalent.
Box office
Thelma earned approximately $13.1 million worldwide. Box Office Mojo reports $9,002,073 domestic, $4,070,636 international, and $13,072,709 worldwide; The Numbers reports the same domestic total with a slightly different international figure, producing a $13,094,578 worldwide total. The opening weekend was approximately $2.3 million from 1,290 theaters.
The small difference reflects database reporting variations. “About $13.1 million worldwide” is the most useful rounded figure. The available evidence does not establish whether the film was profitable, since a verified production budget and complete ancillary-revenue data are not available.

The overall tone is warm and comic, and the film may work well for many families with older teenagers. Viewers who have experienced elder fraud or family-emergency scams may find the opening premise uncomfortable even though the film ultimately treats it as an adventure.

Who should watch it?
Thelma is a good choice if you want an affectionate action comedy, a strong late-career performance, an intergenerational story, or a film about aging that is hopeful without being entirely weightless. It is also well suited to watching with parents or grandparents if they are comfortable with the language, threats, and scam-related distress.
