Netflix announced the casting when production began in April 2024; it also confirmed that Season 5 would be the series’ final season.
What changed after Henry Cavill left?
Netflix named Liam Hemsworth as Geralt in its April 18, 2024 announcement that Season 4 production had begun in the UK. Henry Cavill is not named as Geralt in the Season 4 cast announcement; Hemsworth leads the new season in the role.
Creator, showrunner, and executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich called it the show’s “penultimate Season” and said the cast would be led by Hemsworth. The announcement introduced the change as part of the production update, not as a new storyline explanation for Geralt’s recasting. Netflix’s announcement
When did Season 4 arrive?
Season 4 premiered on Netflix on October 30, 2025. Netflix Tudum announced the date and identified Laurence Fishburne as Regis; Netflix’s current series listing shows four seasons. The series has therefore moved beyond the production milestone described in the original 2024 announcement. Netflix Tudum’s release-date article · Netflix’s series page
Who is in the Season 4 cast?
- Liam Hemsworth plays Geralt of Rivia.
- Anya Chalotra returns as Yennefer.
- Freya Allan returns as Ciri.
- Laurence Fishburne joins as Regis.
Netflix’s season logline places Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri apart from one another as they travel through a war-ravaged Continent. That premise establishes the broad situation, but it does not by itself explain how the new actor’s portrayal relates to Cavill’s earlier seasons.
What is the final season, and which books are involved?
Netflix had already greenlit Season 5 as the final chapter in Geralt’s story when it announced Season 4 production. The company said Seasons 4 and 5 would adapt the remaining Andrzej Sapkowski books it named: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake. That identifies the source material for the two seasons collectively; it does not establish a one-to-one mapping between any book and a particular episode or scene. Netflix’s production announcement

Should you watch the earlier seasons or read the books first?
Watch the earlier seasons for continuity
If you want to follow the television story, start with the earlier seasons. The show’s characters and circumstances continue across seasons, while the season announcement does not say that prior episodes are unnecessary.
Read the novels for Sapkowski’s source material
Reading the books is optional, not a prerequisite for watching the series. Baptism of Fire is a natural starting point if you want to explore one of the novels Netflix named among the source material for Seasons 4 and 5. It is best understood as part of the books behind the final seasons, not as a guaranteed scene-by-scene blueprint.
