According to an excerpt from Anupama Chopra’s book Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge: A Modern Classic, the crew searching Punjab for the sweeping mustard fields Aditya Chopra imagined could find only scattered patches. A local suggestion sent them to neighboring Gurgaon, where they found yellow flowers and a railway track for the scene of Raj and Simran’s reunion. The excerpt also recounts the film’s casting, opening-day nerves and disputed credits.
Why was there no mustard for the DDLJ shoot?
Aditya Chopra had imagined the film’s color as yellow, with Raj and Simran reuniting amid swaying sarson (mustard) flowers. The book excerpt presents that image as part of the film’s “Western look-Eastern-values message.” But when Aditya, his father Yash Chopra and cinematographer Manmohan Singh searched Punjab three weeks before the January schedule, they found scattered patches rather than the broad sea of yellow Aditya wanted.
A local suggested neighboring Gurgaon. The excerpt says the crew found carpets of yellow flowers there, with a railway track running through the field. It is the account given in the excerpt, rather than an independently verified production record. Scroll.in published the excerpt on 22 October 2016 from Anupama Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge: A Modern Classic, published by HarperCollins India. Read the excerpt on Scroll.in.
How Shah Rukh Khan came to accept the romance
The excerpt says Shah Rukh Khan was initially unconvinced about taking on a romance, given the screen persona audiences associated with him at the time. Aditya Chopra met with him several times to persuade him. Khan eventually agreed outside the sets of Karan Arjun at Mehboob Studios, according to the account.

On 20 October 1995, the film’s release day, Aditya reportedly skipped the first show and entered Mumbai’s Gaiety theatre after the interval. He was anxious about how the audience would respond to the climactic speech. The excerpt describes the audience as silent and attentive. It also quotes Chopra reflecting on his aim to respect viewers: “I never want to fake an emotion or cheat them.”

The excerpt recounts conflicting accounts of Honey Irani’s screenplay contribution. Aditya Chopra’s account and Irani’s differed, and the excerpt itself says the facts around the dispute were unclear. Irani’s position is quoted there: “Even if 80 per cent of the screenplay was his, at least 20 per cent was mine.” That is her claim in a contested account, not a settled allocation of credit.

It also reports disagreement between Chopra and dialogue writer Javed Siddiqui over changes to the dialogue. The excerpt presents this as a dispute between their accounts; it does not establish a definitive resolution.
