Spoilers for The Witcher season 1. Season 1 follows three timelines, not one continuous sequence: Yennefer’s story begins earliest, Geralt’s adventures span years and eventually overlap with hers, and Ciri’s flight from Cintra is the latest central thread. The threads converge when Geralt and Ciri finally meet.
Why season 1 jumps between timelines
The season introduces Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer at different points in their lives. Their stories unfold across different periods before intersecting, so an episode can move between a character’s earlier history and events closer to the fall of Cintra. Netflix Tudum describes the season as introducing the trio through “three separate (and massively impactful) timelines” (Netflix Tudum, January 3, 2023).
The show does not consistently supply clear dates. It is more reliable to track the episodes, characters, and whether an event takes place before or after Cintra falls than to assign exact calendar years. TV Guide’s episode-by-episode reconstruction is useful as a guide, but calls its placement “our best attempt” because some events have few or no clear chronology markers (TV Guide, 2021).
The season 1 events in relative order
| Relative order | Character and episode marker | What happens | Relation to Cintra’s fall |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earliest main thread | Yennefer, episodes 2–3 | As a young woman, Yennefer is taken to Aretuza, trained as a mage, transformed after years of study, and enters court life. | Before the Ciri-centered crisis. |
| Earlier adventures | Geralt, episodes 1–3 | Geralt becomes known as the Butcher of Blaviken, meets Jaskier, and takes the striga contract. | Before the fall of Cintra. |
| A connection is made | Geralt, episode 4 | At a Cintran banquet, Geralt saves Duny and invokes the Law of Surprise, not knowing Pavetta is pregnant. The child connected to his claim is Ciri. | Before the fall of Cintra. |
| The timelines begin to overlap | Geralt and Yennefer, episodes 5–6 | They first meet during the djinn story and cross paths again on the dragon hunt. | These encounters belong to the longer-running Geralt and Yennefer stories, rather than Ciri’s flight. |
| Latest central thread | Ciri, after the attack on Cintra | Nilfgaard attacks; Ciri escapes and searches for safety. | After Cintra falls. |
| Convergence | Geralt and Ciri, season finale | Geralt’s earlier claim connects with Ciri’s search for him, and they meet at the end of the season. | After Ciri’s flight has begun. |
What connects Geralt and Ciri
At the banquet in episode 4, the Law of Surprise turns Geralt’s rescue of Duny into an unexpected claim on what Duny does not yet know he has. Since Pavetta is pregnant, that claim links Geralt to her unborn child, Ciri. The custom is a reward that can involve an unknown child or possession after a life-saving deed, according to Netflix’s season recap (Netflix Tudum, June 22, 2023). Geralt and Ciri are therefore connected before they meet; their encounter at the season’s end pays off that link.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to follow the timeline while watching
- Use character and episode markers. Ask whose story an episode scene follows, then place it in that character’s arc.
- Use Cintra as the clearest dividing line. Geralt’s early adventures and the banquet precede the fall; Ciri’s escape follows it.
- Expect overlap. Geralt and Yennefer’s stories intersect before the finale, even while Ciri’s thread is moving toward them.
- Do not treat inferred dates as confirmed. The series’ relative order is clearer than a precise calendar ledger.
How this differs from the franchise timeline
Netflix Tudum’s official Witcher timeline covers events beyond season 1. For this season, the useful point is its framing of three distinct character timelines; the broader franchise chronology should not be mistaken for a season-one episode guide.
