HBO’s cast announcement names 12 performers from The Wire in We Own This City—two more than the 10 promised by this article’s original title. The series brings back actors, not their former characters: it is a new, six-episode limited series about Baltimore’s Gun Trace Task Force, not a continuation of The Wire.
Which actors from The Wire are in We Own This City?
HBO’s April 2022 announcement identifies these 12 performers as returning from The Wire:

The list is based on HBO’s announcement, which names twelve returning performers. It does not establish which two names might have been left out of a separate ten-actor list, so there is no reliable basis for guessing. HBO’s release also separates the wider ensemble into main cast and guest stars; the list above answers the narrower question of who it identifies as returning from The Wire. HBO’s cast announcement
How their roles differ from The Wire
The actors appear in different roles in the new story. The clearest documented contrasts are:
#1 Best Overall
| Performer | The Wire | We Own This City |
|---|---|---|
| Jamie Hector | Marlo Stanfield | Homicide detective Sean Suiter |
| Domenick Lombardozzi | Herc | A police union president |
| Delaney Williams | Sgt. Jay Landsman | Police Commissioner Kevin Davis |
These pairings are identified in The Washington Post’s 2022 feature; HBO’s character descriptions also identify Williams as Kevin Davis. The available role details do not establish a specific We Own This City character for every performer on HBO’s returning-actor list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A reunion, not a sequel
We Own This City reunites performers and members of The Wire’s creative team, but it does not continue that show’s plot. As The Washington Post put it in its April 22, 2022 headline, it “is not Season 6 of ‘The Wire.’” The limited series dramatizes the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force and the corruption and institutional failures around it.
Rank #2
The series adapts journalist Justin Fenton’s 2021 nonfiction book, We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops, and Corruption. HBO announced six episodes, with the series premiering April 25, 2022, on HBO and HBO Max. Those are its original release details, not confirmation of where it streams today.
The distinction mattered to the creators. George Pelecanos told The Washington Post: “Neither of us wanted to do a show about dirty cops. It’s been done before, and it’s been done well.” David Simon summarized the larger subject: “The drug war has to end.” The series approaches that subject through a separate story rather than revisiting the characters viewers knew from The Wire.
