But it also recalls Moiraine and Siuan, whose intimacy has roots in the books and is brought to the foreground in the adaptation. These are distinct stories: one develops a relationship shaped by grief, while the other adapts a long-running bond whose planned screen resolution was cut short when the series was cancelled.
Two relationships, with different histories
The Wheel of Time presents more than one queer relationship, but they do not have the same basis in the novels or the same role in the show. Moiraine and Siuan’s story draws on book language and backstory; Alanna, Maksim and Ihvon’s triad receives more explicit treatment on screen.
| Story | What the books establish | What the adaptation does | Emotional focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moiraine and Siuan | Their intimacy at the White Tower is described as “pillow friends”; their adult relationship is hinted at rather than made explicit. | The show brings their adult intimacy to the forefront. | Their love and the consequences of Siuan’s death. |
| Alanna, Maksim and Ihvon | The books do not establish a comparable storyline. | Season 3 explicitly explores a romantic relationship among three people. | How the characters’ grief changes after one member dies. |
The distinctions matter: the triad’s bereavement is not the same event as Siuan’s death, and the two storylines should not be treated as interchangeable examples of adaptation.
Moiraine and Siuan: book implication made explicit
Showrunner Rafe Judkins described the book’s White Tower history in an interview with Nerdist: “In the books, it’s made very clear that Moiraine and Siuan are ‘pillow friends’ at the White Tower, which is code for an intimate relationship. After that, the two of them were the only witnesses to Gitara Moroso’s foretelling of the birth of the Dragon Reborn.”

Judkins said the show follows that history while making the adult relationship more visible: “In the show we’ve stuck exactly with that story,” and “while it’s only hinted at in the books that Moiraine and Siuan continued their intimate relationship into adulthood, we’ve brought that to the forefront.”
Is their relationship in the rest of the books as well?
The books provide an intimate past at the White Tower and hints about a continuing adult connection; they do not present that adult relationship as explicitly as the television adaptation does. The series makes the romance a clearer part of the characters’ on-screen story.

Alanna, Maksim and Ihvon: a triad and its grief
Season 3 gives Alanna’s relationship with Maksim and Ihvon a distinct shape: it is a romantic relationship among three people, and the story follows how grief changes the bond after one of them dies. Taylor Napier, who plays Maksim, described the acting challenge in an interview with WoT Series: “It’s such a cool challenge as an actor because I have to define my love for two people, romantically, and also figure out how our relationship works as a threesome.”
That account is about the triad’s own dynamic and loss, not a parallel version of Moiraine and Siuan’s story. Season 3’s main source was Robert Jordan’s fourth novel, The Shadow Rising, according to an interview with Napier identified by GLAAD. Readers interested in the season’s source material can start there, while bearing in mind that screen adaptations may change emphasis and presentation.

What the show had planned for Moiraine and Siuan
In an April 17, 2025 Instagram AMA, Judkins said Siuan dies in Season 3 and that the show had a Moiraine-and-Siuan “endgame” planned if the series continued. He framed the decision to portray their love this way: “We knew going in we’d have to do that, so we could either not make them lesbians or see one or both of them die. I think seeing their love was the right choice.” The comments describe a conditional plan, not a completed or guaranteed future storyline.
Prime Video cancelled The Wheel of Time after three seasons, as reported by WoT Series on June 6, 2025. The planned continuation therefore should not be described as forthcoming: the series ended without the additional seasons Judkins had discussed.
