Three Weeknd albums in the reviewed U.S. Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) records have reached multi-platinum certification: Beauty Behind the Madness, Trilogy and Starboy. Those awards do not mean the same thing as a million traditional copies sold: RIAA album certifications count eligible streams and track sales alongside album purchases.
Which Weeknd albums cleared the million-unit threshold?
The table lists the albums supported by the cited RIAA records. Platinum certifications are U.S. award levels, not worldwide sales totals, and the dates below identify the historical award records rather than a current lifetime-sales count.
| Album | RIAA record | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Beauty Behind the Madness (2015) | Two-times platinum in February 2016; three-times platinum in April 2016 | RIAA certification history at those dates; not a count of traditional copies purchased. RIAA historical award records |
| Trilogy (2012) | Multi-platinum certification in March 2016 | U.S. certification evidence that clears the million-unit threshold under RIAA award rules. RIAA historical award records |
| Starboy (2016) | Two-times platinum in June 2017 | A dated U.S. certification snapshot, not a current cumulative sales figure. RIAA historical award records |
Why certification is not the same as copies sold
RIAA album awards measure eligible consumption, not only physical and digital album purchases. In its 2016 explanation, the RIAA said 1,500 on-demand audio and/or video song streams count as the equivalent of 10 track sales or one album sale for album-award calculations; track downloads also contribute under the program’s rules. That is why a multi-platinum certification supports the claim that an album crossed an award threshold, but not the narrower claim that the same number of individual copies were bought. The distinction matters especially when comparing certification levels with reported chart sales.

A separate UK chart-sales figure
The Official Charts Company reported that Beauty Behind the Madness had more than 595,000 UK chart sales and described it as The Weeknd’s biggest album in the UK by that measure. The report’s excerpt does not show a publication year, so this should be treated as a point-in-time UK figure—not a current worldwide total or a directly comparable RIAA award level. What this list does—and does not—show
These records establish that the three named albums achieved multi-platinum RIAA certification. They do not provide a definitive worldwide ranking of The Weeknd’s albums by traditional physical and download sales. Nor does the absence of another album from this short list prove it failed to reach a million copies: the cited evidence only supports the specific certification and chart-sales claims shown here.
