Spoilers for the 2024 film The Watchers. The creatures are ancient shapeshifting faeries, and Madeline is a half-human changeling who escaped Professor Kilmartin’s captivity. She spared Mina and Ciara after Mina appealed to her empathy, then left to seek others like herself. Mina returns to her family, but the final image of Madeline watching her leaves Madeline’s intentions unresolved.
Who are the Watchers?
Professor Kilmartin’s research explains that the Watchers are ancient faeries, also described as changelings, who can imitate human forms. They once lived alongside humans, but the two groups became enemies. The faeries were confined underground; those who escaped survived in the forest, where they watch the humans sheltering there.
Their imitations are more than visual disguises. In the forest, a Watcher takes the form of Ciara’s dead husband, John, and lures Daniel away from safety. The creature uses a face associated with grief and trust to draw him out, and Daniel is killed.
What is Madeline’s real identity?
Madeline is not an ordinary human survivor. Kilmartin captured her and kept her in his bunker. She escaped, then used the appearance of his dead wife to gain the survivors’ trust and help them find a way out of the forest. When Mina later visits Kilmartin’s university and connects Madeline’s face to the scientist’s wife, she realizes who her companion really is.

The film identifies Madeline as a half-human changeling. She has a connection to both worlds, but belongs comfortably to neither: the Watchers reject her, and she is uneasy among humans. Her protection of the group therefore has more than one possible meaning. It helps the others survive, but she has also concealed her identity and used a human appearance to earn their confidence.
Why does Madeline spare Mina and Ciara?
After the escape, Mina confronts Madeline. Madeline first appears as Ciara, and the encounter becomes a fight before she reveals her changeling identity. Mina appeals to Madeline’s capacity for empathy. Madeline chooses not to kill Mina and Ciara, then leaves to search for others like herself.
The choice is the emotional center of the twist. Madeline is dangerous, and the film does not erase the deception or threat she represents. But she is not shown simply following the Watchers’ hostility toward humans. Mina’s appeal gives her another path: she can act on empathy and pursue a community of her own. That makes Madeline a bridge between the two groups, without making her future allegiance certain.
What happens to Mina at the end?
Mina returns to her twin sister and the children. Her reunion marks a shift in her personal story: she begins to forgive herself for the childhood car accident that killed her mother. Reconnecting with her family does not undo that loss, but it suggests she can stop treating guilt as a reason to remain apart from the people she loves.
The final image shows Madeline nearby in another disguise, watching Mina. It confirms that Madeline remains present, but not why. She could be keeping watch over Mina, observing her, or pursuing a purpose the film does not disclose. The scene leaves the family reunion hopeful while carrying the forest’s surveillance motif into Mina’s life beyond it.
How the ending’s restraint shapes the twist
Director Ishana Night Shyamalan said, “It was always my intention from the very beginning to play with restraint as much as possible.” She explained that withholding information allows the audience’s imagination to sustain unease. That approach fits the Madeline reveal: the film gives viewers enough to understand her identity, but does not settle what she will do next.

Shyamalan also linked the film’s mirrors to uncertainty about what is real: “The mirror imagery confuses people about their perception of reality, and I think that’s a great by-product of the approach.” The reflections and imitations reinforce a story in which appearances are unreliable, while the final disguise ensures that even after the supernatural explanation arrives, Madeline remains difficult to read.

The Watchers adapts A.M. Shine’s 2022 novel of the same name. Shyamalan said she returned to the novel’s structure and characters while reshaping the material for a theatrical film. A June 2024 ending explainer characterized the adaptation as fairly faithful, including its major twists; that is a secondary source’s broad description, not a detailed scene-by-scene comparison. The film’s ending can be understood on its own without assuming every book detail matches it.
