What happens in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live episode 6?
“The Last Time,” the 46-minute season finale released March 31, 2024, begins with Rick and Michonne deciding that the CRM’s secret operation must be brought before the Civic Republic. Apple TV’s official synopsis puts the challenge simply: “Rick and Michonne have to perform a near-impossible miracle.” Apple TV
Rick receives Major General Beale’s Echelon Briefing and learns the scale of the threat: the CRM intends to destroy Portland. Rather than protect themselves by staying out of the conflict, Rick and Michonne decide to act. Their target is not just Beale; they need to stop the attack and make the Civic Republic confront what its military has been doing.
How do Rick and Michonne stop the CRM attack on Portland?
Rick kills Major General Beale
Rick kills Beale, removing the leader behind the plan. But that alone does not neutralize the danger: the CRM’s attack operation and its forces are still in play. Rick and Michonne escape and redirect the operation’s explosive threat against the CRM force itself, turning the machinery of the planned assault back on its operators. ComicBook.com’s finale recap

Pearl Thorne catches up with them
Pearl Thorne confronts Rick and Michonne amid the ensuing chaos. The encounter ends with Thorne dead. Before the end, she recognizes that Okafor was right to believe Rick and Michonne could offer hope. That acknowledgment gives the conflict a personal resolution: the idea Okafor tried to advance survives the CRM’s violence, even as Thorne does not.
What happens to the CRM and Portland?
The finale closes the political thread with a change in who holds power. The Civic Republic Council assumes emergency oversight of the remaining CRM forces and changes the isolation policy that had kept the city closed. The ending does not present the Civic Republic as instantly remade; it shows a shift in oversight and rules after the CRM’s operation is exposed. Portland’s threatened destruction is stopped, while the city’s future is framed through the Civic Republic’s new decisions rather than a further battle.

Do Rick and Michonne make it home?
Yes. After the Civic Republic’s political turn, Rick and Michonne fly home and reunite with Judith and RJ. RJ has known his father as “the Brave Man”; meeting Rick in person makes the family reunion especially significant. He calls Rick that familiar name, and Rick tells him he can call him Dad. The final movement is from a public crisis to the intimate relationship Rick has missed while away.
Why does the finale end with Rick and Michonne together?
The resolution works on two levels: political change inside the Civic Republic and the return of the Grimes family to one another. Scott M. Gimple described the intended endpoint as more than Rick and Michonne physically finding each other: “That was our endpoint, and we figured out the journey to that endpoint of two people not just physically finding each other, not just physically bringing each other back, but doing that on an emotional level, on a spiritual level, on an identity level.” TV Insider

Danai Gurira said the creative team wanted the pair to be empowered together, rather than ending their shared trauma with one of them dying: “For them to have gone through all that trauma and tragedy just for one of them to die… That’s too dark, even for our show!” She also said reconnecting them with the wider Alexandria group was discussed, but that it would have needed more time than the six-episode story could give it.
