“If History Were a Conflagration” is the Season 2 finale of The Walking Dead: Dead City. AMC lists its original air date as June 22, 2025, and gives the episode the synopsis: “Maggie makes a painful choice, while Negan puts on a show.” (AMC episode listing.)
What happens at the church gathering?
Bruegel suspects Negan has called a strategy meeting to poison him and his men. The meal is not the trap: Negan has hidden walkers beneath the banquet table, and they erupt into the gathering. The ambush turns the meeting into a display of the control Negan is trying to reclaim.
Negan later corners Bruegel and kills him with methane and fire. He then turns his attention to Perlie, but Maggie stabs Negan in the back before he can finish the attack. The violence is not the finale’s decisive moment, however. That comes when Maggie has an opportunity to kill Negan and chooses not to.

Why does Maggie decide to kill Negan?
The Dama presses Maggie to kill Negan, framing revenge as something Maggie should do for herself and for Hershel. TVLine reports her appeal as: “Don’t do it for me, do it for you,” followed by “Free yourself and Hershel.” The Dama, a former theater critic, is trying to turn Maggie’s unresolved grief into a weapon.
Hershel supports the plan. Maggie admits she has not recovered from Glenn’s murder, then sets out to take revenge on Negan. Her decision is tied both to Glenn and to the hope that removing Negan could change Hershel’s situation with the Dama.

Does Maggie kill Negan?
No. After Maggie stabs him, she later finds Negan grieving over Ginny, who died and turned while he was away. Maggie has Lucille, the bat associated with Negan’s past violence, but does not use it. Seeing his grief changes the encounter: she spares him instead of carrying out the killing she had set out to do.
That choice is not a declaration that Glenn’s murder no longer matters or that Maggie and Negan have reconciled completely. It is a decision not to make revenge the answer in that moment. The finale leaves their history intact while showing that Maggie can choose what she does next.

What happens to Hershel and the Dama?
Maggie does not take Hershel away from the Dama. She tells him she did not kill his father’s murderer and says she will stay in the city in case he needs her. That leaves Hershel under the Dama’s influence, even as Maggie rejects the course the Dama urged her to take.
The decision makes the ending uneasy rather than neat: Maggie stays close to her son, but the finale does not show her freeing him from the Dama or ending the danger around them.

How does the Season 2 finale end?
Maggie and Perlie help the injured Negan to an apartment. Perlie removes the knife from Negan’s back, and the three decide to move forward together. Their alliance is practical and fragile, built in the middle of a conflict that is still unfolding.
New Babylon forces enter Manhattan as the season closes. Their arrival adds another threat to an already unstable situation, while the Dama’s influence over Hershel remains unresolved. In a June 22, 2025 interview with TV Insider, Walking Dead universe chief content officer Scott M. Gimple described Maggie and Negan’s reunion and resolution as the result of a difficult journey toward closure. The finale offers a step toward that closure, not a clean resolution of the city’s conflicts.
