The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carol is challenging in a specific way: Carol’s return gives the France-set series an emotionally rich reunion, but that familiar relationship can draw attention away from what made the spinoff feel distinct. The six-episode season’s appeal depends partly on whether you want more time with Daryl and Carol or more distance from the original series’ familiar dynamics.
What Season 2 is about
AMC announced the six-episode second season as a continuation of the story begun in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Carol searches for Daryl, while Daryl faces the question of whether to remain in France. At the Nest, his decision carries consequences for the community around him. Beyond their personal stories, the conflict between Genet’s Pouvoir and the Union of Hope shapes the struggle over France’s future. AMC announced the season and its premise on June 6, 2024.
The season separates its leads for much of the setup. Daryl has joined Isabelle, Sylvie, Laurent and Losang’s community at the Nest; Carol searches for him without his knowledge. Their parallel journeys let the series explore each character on their own while drawing on the history they share. That structure is the source of both the season’s emotional pull and its creative tension.
Why Carol’s return can make the season feel less distinctive
The first season’s France setting gave the spinoff a different landscape and a more isolated premise. Bringing Carol into that story reconnects it to one of The Walking Dead’s central relationships. For viewers invested in Daryl and Carol, that history is a meaningful strength: their bond is built on trust, love and shared survival. Melissa McBride described those elements in an AMC interview published October 7, 2024; Norman Reedus called their connection an “earned relationship.”

The tradeoff is that the reunion can make the show feel more familiar. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus says Carol’s return “cuts into some of the elements that made this Walking Dead spinoff unique,” while also calling it an “undead treat” to see Reedus and McBride together again. That is a critical interpretation of the season’s balance, not proof that every viewer will feel the same way. The reunion may deepen the character story even as it reduces some of the novelty of Daryl being alone in France.
Why the season gives the characters room to breathe
This is a character-led season, not simply a sequence of action set pieces. Reedus said the original ensemble was so large that “a lot of times, character development didn’t get to go full circle for everybody unless your character died.” He sees the spinoff as an opportunity to give individual characters more time. Carol and Daryl’s separate journeys provide room for that focus, while the conflict at the Nest and between the larger groups keeps the story moving.

McBride described the mix of plot and quieter moments in the same AMC interview: “We’re looking forward to a greater conflict between these two groups, and we’re going to dive into that. Carol has landed in enemy territory. Truly, the season is so packed, and yet, at the same time, it does feel like it takes a breath.” Her comment reflects the actor and executive producer’s view of the season’s rhythm: escalating danger alongside stretches of character and setting rather than constant momentum.
What the reception numbers say—and what they do not
Rotten Tomatoes listed the season at 71% on its Tomatometer, based on 14 critic reviews, and 43% on its Popcornmeter, based on more than 500 audience ratings, when accessed in 2026. Those are separate, changing aggregates: the Tomatometer reflects counted critic reviews, while the Popcornmeter reflects audience ratings. Neither is a score for every viewer, and the gap does not establish why audience members responded differently.

The figures support describing the reception as mixed, but they do not establish that the season is universally disliked or objectively worse than its predecessor. The more precise case for calling it challenging comes from the creative tradeoff identified in the critics’ consensus: the reunion is a draw, but it can also weaken the spinoff’s distinctiveness.
