Sundance Head, the country singer who won season 11 of NBC’s The Voice in 2016, was shot in the stomach at his East Texas ranch on November 15, 2024. His agent described the shooting as an accidental discharge while Head was hunting alone. Head was treated and released from hospital that day; a later report said he returned to performing about three weeks afterward. Those are dated updates, not confirmation of his health today.
What happened to Sundance Head?
Head, whose legal name is Jason Head, was hunting alone at his East Texas ranch on November 15, 2024, according to an account his agent, Trey Newman, gave the Associated Press. Newman said Head reached into his vehicle to retrieve a .22-caliber pistol. It fell from its holster, struck the vehicle’s exterior and discharged. Head flagged down help and was airlifted to a hospital in Tyler, Texas. The Associated Press reported the account on November 17, 2024.
The explanation should be understood as the agent’s account, not as a reconstruction independently established by police. Head also characterized the shooting as accidental in a subsequent video update. Early coverage reflected uncertainty about the circumstances before those later accounts appeared.
What was known about his injuries and recovery?
Hospital treatment
Newman said the bullet missed vital organs and lodged in fatty tissue in Head’s abdomen. Head did not need surgery and was released from the hospital on the day of the shooting. The Los Angeles Times reported family and agent updates on November 18, 2024, including that doctors left the bullet in place.

Head’s own update
In a video statement reproduced by the Los Angeles Times, Head said: “I am alive. I’m in a lot of pain. I was shot accidentally in the stomach. I was alone. It was one of the craziest things that could’ve possibly happened.” The statement described his condition shortly after the incident, not his health now.
Return to performing
On December 10, 2024, NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth reported that Head had returned to the stage about three weeks after the injury and discussed the incident in an interview. A return to performing at that time does not establish whether he has since recovered fully or experienced later complications.

What is known about his health now?
The available dated updates establish that Head was released from hospital on November 15, 2024, and was reported back onstage in December. They do not establish his current health status as of October 2026. Without a newer, credible update, it would be inaccurate to say that he is currently recovered or currently experiencing complications.
