The Velvet Sundown’s revised Spotify biography described the act as a synthetic music project made with AI assistance. Separately, Deezer’s CEO told Swedish broadcaster SVT that the service’s detection tools identified every Velvet Sundown track as 100% AI-generated. The band’s statement and Deezer’s detection result are distinct claims, and the latter should be attributed to Deezer and SVT.
What The Velvet Sundown said about AI
In a revised Spotify artist biography reported by Rolling Stone on July 6, 2025, The Velvet Sundown called itself “a synthetic music project guided by human creative direction.” The bio said its music, voices, lyrics, characters and stories were created with AI assistance. That is the project’s own public acknowledgment of AI involvement; it does not identify a specific generation tool or document how each track was made. Rolling Stone
What Deezer reported—and what that finding means
On July 4, 2025, SVT reported that Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said the platform’s detection tools had found all of The Velvet Sundown’s tracks to be 100% AI-generated. SVT also reported that Deezer labeled the music and removed it from its payment pool at that time. This is a platform detection result reported by SVT, not the wording of the band’s biography. It is also a dated account of Deezer’s actions in July 2025, not confirmation of the group’s current catalog labels or payment status. SVT
Why the early accounts caused confusion
The public story was inconsistent at first. In early July 2025, an account presented as the band denied AI use. Rolling Stone then reported shifting accounts from a pseudonymous person calling himself Andrew Frelon: he said at least some music used Suno, and later acknowledged impersonating the group. Because Frelon was not established as an identified creator or authoritative band member, his statements are contested, attributed claims—not a verified production record. They do not establish that every track was made with Suno. Rolling Stone

How the project drew attention
The group released two albums, Floating on Echoes and Dust and Silence, in June 2025 and gained attention on Spotify. The Guardian described the music, promotional imagery and backstory as AI-generated. On July 14, 2025, it reported that the act had passed one million Spotify streams in a matter of weeks. That is a historical stream count, not a count of unique listeners or a current total. The Guardian
What the episode raises about transparency and authorship
The case prompted calls for clearer disclosure and questions about who should be credited when AI is involved in making and presenting music. The Guardian quoted Roberto Neri, chief executive of the Ivors Academy, warning that AI-generated acts reaching large audiences without human creators raise concerns about “transparency, authorship and consent.” Sophie Jones, chief strategy officer at the British Phonographic Industry, said AI should serve human creativity rather than supplant it. These are industry representatives’ views on the broader issues; they do not establish the details of The Velvet Sundown’s production process. The Guardian

How to check an unfamiliar artist’s AI claims
No single clue proves whether a song or artist is AI-generated. The Associated Press recommends looking for a traceable history, evidence of real-world performances such as concert footage, and releases connected to an established label. A track might appear on generative services such as Suno or Udio, though locating a particular song can be difficult. Deezer displays an “AI-generated content” label for tracks its systems identify. Treat these as signals to weigh together, not guarantees about a track’s origin. Associated Press
