Damon and Elena’s relationship changes through a series of moments that shift them from wary allies to a couple: a dance at Miss Mystic Falls, a confession Damon makes her forget, a decisive kiss, a new kind of closeness after Elena becomes a vampire, and a farewell before her supernatural coma. This is a chronological editorial shortlist, not an official or audience-wide ranking.
1. The Miss Mystic Falls dance (Season 1, Episode 19)
With Stefan absent while struggling with bloodlust, Damon steps in as Elena’s dance partner. The scene gives them a moment of intimacy and marks a visible shift from their antagonistic dynamic toward mutual attention. Stefan’s absence shapes the scene, but the dance itself is a step in Damon and Elena’s connection.
2. Damon confesses his feelings, then makes Elena forget (Season 2, Episode 8)
Damon tells Elena how he feels, then uses compulsion to erase the confession from her memory. The gesture pairs vulnerability with restraint: he reveals the truth but removes the pressure of asking her to respond, while her relationship with Stefan remains a central complication.
3. The porch kiss (Season 3, Episode 10)
Damon kisses Elena on the porch, acting decisively on feelings that had been building between them. A 2025 retrospective distinguishes this kiss from an earlier impulsive kiss, when Damon believed he was dying, and treats the porch scene as a turning point. The kiss heightens the strain around Elena’s relationship with Stefan; it does not by itself resolve the triangle.

4. Elena drinks Damon’s blood after her transition (Season 4, Episode 2)
As a new vampire struggling to feed, Elena accepts Damon’s offer of blood. The moment makes their closeness practical as well as emotional: Damon helps her through an urgent part of her transition, and their bond takes on a new form. It also aggravates the tension between Elena and Stefan.
5. Their goodbye dance before Elena’s coma (Season 6, Episode 22)
Before Elena enters a supernatural coma linked to Bonnie’s life, she and Damon share a farewell dance. This is a separation, not a final resolution of their relationship. The series later reunites them, giving the dance its weight as a goodbye to a period of their life together rather than a permanent ending.

Why these scenes trace the relationship
The five scenes mark different kinds of change: shared attention, a private confession, a choice to act, practical trust, and separation. They also show why Damon and Elena’s story is inseparable from Stefan’s place in Elena’s life. Executive producer Julie Plec described the season-three tension in a 2012 TVLine interview: “As we’ve seen [with] Damon and Elena’s relationship in the past, they keep being drawn to each other, but obviously there’s something holding her back, rightfully so in a lot of ways because they’ve been through a lot together and not necessarily all good.” Her comment is contemporaneous context for that season’s arc, not a ranking of moments across the completed series.
The CW’s official series description centers the story on vampire brothers Stefan and Damon and the girl at the heart of their shared history. These scenes offer one episode-grounded way to follow how that premise develops for Damon and Elena.
