Spoilers for the entire series, including the Season 4 finale. The Hargreeves siblings and Lila let the Cleanse consume them so the Marigold connected to their existence can be removed and the fractured timelines can collapse into one. In that restored timeline, the siblings never existed—and nobody remembers them.
What happens in the finale?
Ben and Jennifer’s Marigold and Durango come together, setting off the Cleanse: a destructive force that threatens the branching timelines. As the crisis unfolds, Five discovers a connection between the Hargreeves’ Marigold-linked existence, the fractured timelines and the recurring apocalypses.

The siblings and Lila conclude that the timelines cannot be restored while the Marigold in them remains. They choose to let the Cleanse consume them, removing the source of the fractures. The result is a single restored timeline in which the Hargreeves siblings never existed. The people they knew appear to live ordinary lives, but the siblings’ sacrifice is not publicly recognized.
Why do the siblings sacrifice themselves?
Within the story, their sacrifice is the way to eliminate the Marigold tied to the fractured timelines and stop the cycle of apocalypses. The finale presents this as a collective choice: the siblings and Lila accept that restoring one timeline means giving up their own existence.

The scale of the cycle is conveyed through a Five variant’s claim that attempts to save the world have been repeated 140,000 times. TIME reports this as a number stated in the episode; it is an in-story count, not an independently verified figure.
Did the Hargreeves die?
Series creator and showrunner Steve Blackman said the siblings do not technically die. His explanation is that they cease to exist across the timelines, and no memory of them remains in the restored world. That distinction describes Blackman’s intended meaning; viewers may still describe the outcome as a death or sacrifice in ordinary terms.
Blackman framed the ending around whether someone can be a superhero if nobody knows that person existed or remembers what they did. The finale leaves the Hargreeves without recognition for saving the world. Blackman also described the family’s bond as central to the story, saying, “I wanted to show that families, even with time apart, can always come back together.”
What does the restored timeline show?
The final scenes shift to a world where familiar characters appear to be living ordinary lives. The Hargreeves are absent from it, and those characters do not remember them. The contrast is deliberate: the timeline has been restored, but the people who made that possible have no place in its shared memory.

What do the marigold flowers in the mid-credit scene mean?
The mid-credit image shows marigold flowers blooming in the park. Blackman declined to define their meaning, saying, “I’m going to leave it to you and the fans to interpret that scene. I don’t want to say anything about it.” The image can invite hope or suggest that something remains, but it does not confirm that the siblings survived, were resurrected or will return. Any such conclusion is speculation.
How to read the ending
The finale offers two distinct kinds of explanation. The plot mechanics connect Marigold and Durango to the Cleanse, and the Cleanse to the restoration of a single timeline. The thematic explanation comes from Blackman’s interest in unremembered heroism: the siblings’ actions matter even though the restored world has no record of them.
That theme does not dictate whether the ending feels satisfying. A viewer can understand the sacrifice as the story’s solution and still question the cost, or read the flowers as an image of hope without treating them as proof of a sequel or return.
