It does not establish that Mordecai committed those murders: the series presents the connection as a question, and its director, Skye Borgman, said, “We don’t actually know the answers.”
What is The Truth About Jim about?
The 2024 Investigation Discovery series follows Barter, her mother Shannon, and her grandmother Judy as they revisit family history and investigate allegations of abuse and secrets surrounding Mordecai. The documentary asks whether he may have been connected to unsolved murders; that premise is not a confirmed finding. Warner Bros. Discovery described the central question as whether Mordecai, “their husband, stepfather, and step-grandfather,” was a notorious serial killer. The announcement frames it as a question the series investigates, not an answer already established by authorities.
Borgman, who directed the series, put the uncertainty plainly in an interview: “We don’t actually know the answers.” She spoke of the unknowns around whether Mordecai was the Zodiac or the Santa Rosa killer. Those remarks describe the documentary’s unresolved inquiry; they are not a legal finding or proof of involvement.
What happens in the four episodes?
The series follows Barter’s inquiry from family testimony toward an attempt to persuade law enforcement to examine the material she has gathered.

Does the documentary prove Jim Mordecai was a serial killer?
No. The official descriptions establish that Barter investigates a possible link between Mordecai and unsolved murders, but they do not establish that he committed them. The reported handoff of files is not itself evidence of a police investigation or a confirmed identification, charge, or conviction. Borgman’s interview statement that the answers remain unknown reinforces that the series leaves the central murder question unresolved.
That distinction matters when watching a family-led true-crime investigation: testimony about alleged abuse, a relative’s account, a suspected connection to other cases, and a conclusion supported by law enforcement are different kinds of claims. The series’ official episode guide describes the first three as part of Barter’s inquiry and reports her attempt to prompt an investigation; it supplies no official resolution.
