Later accounts of Kaya’s living arrangements and Panettiere’s addiction struggles call for care: the public record describes a painful family and custody process, not a simple story of a mother abandoning her child.

A relationship across continents
Later accounts place the start of Panettiere and Klitschko’s on-and-off relationship around 2009. In May 2011, they announced their first split after roughly two years together. Panettiere said they still loved and respected one another and would remain close friends. Klitschko pointed to the difficulty of maintaining a relationship across two continents. Reconciliation, engagement and a daughter
The couple later reconciled and became engaged in 2013. Their daughter, Kaya, was born in December 2014. They did not marry, according to the available reporting. Why Kaya lived with Klitschko
Panettiere has described the custody process as deeply painful and discussed struggling with alcohol and opioid addiction. In a 2022 interview covered by the Los Angeles Times, she said of signing custody papers: “Signing those papers was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever, ever had to do in my life.”

The Associated Press later reported that Kaya began living full-time with Klitschko in Ukraine when she was two. Those details should be read alongside Panettiere’s account of addiction and a distressing custody process, not reduced to an unsupported claim that she simply chose to give up her daughter. Public accounts offer context, but they do not establish every private detail of the arrangements or the former couple’s motives. The AP report discusses Kaya’s residence and Panettiere’s account.

Although their engagement ended, public reporting describes Panettiere and Klitschko as coparents. In an August 2026 statement reported by the Associated Press, Klitschko said: “To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was.” The statement reflects his public commitment about how he would speak to Kaya about Panettiere; it does not reveal the private terms of their coparenting relationship.
