IC-814 was hijacked on 24 December 1999 on a flight from Kathmandu to Delhi. After stops in India, Pakistan and Dubai, the aircraft reached Kandahar on 25 December; the hijacking ended on 31 December after India released three prisoners in exchange for the remaining hostages. That chronology and the details below come from the Indian government’s statement to Parliament on 13 March 2000. Netflix’s 2024 limited series is inspired by real events and adapted from a book co-written by the flight’s captain, but its scenes are a dramatic adaptation—not, by themselves, documentary evidence.
What happened to IC-814?
According to the Indian government’s parliamentary statement of 13 March 2000, Indian Airlines flight IC-814 was hijacked at about 16:53 Indian Standard Time on 24 December 1999 while travelling from Kathmandu to Delhi. The statement records the aircraft landing at Amritsar, then Lahore, Dubai and Kandahar. It reached Kandahar at 08:33 on 25 December.
The statement says discussions by UAE authorities with the hijackers led to 27 passengers, including women and children, being released in Dubai. Rupin Katyal’s body was also off-loaded there; the government account says he had died from injuries inflicted by stabbing. The remaining passengers and crew were held in Kandahar until the hijacking ended on the evening of 31 December.
What did the hijackers demand, and how did the crisis end?
The government statement says the hijackers first asked for Masood Azhar’s release in exchange for a selection of hostages. The government rejected that proposal and sought a complete statement of demands. It records the demands as the release of 36 prisoners, including Azhar; the coffin of Sajad Afghani; and US$200 million.

According to the same account, the coffin and money demands were dropped. In the final exchange, India released three prisoners—Masood Azhar, Mushtaq Zargar and Omar Sheikh—in return for all the remaining hostages. The figure of 36 refers to the initial demand, not the number ultimately released.
What does the Indian government’s account say about its decisions?
The parliamentary statement describes the government’s priorities as ending the hijacking, securing the safe return of passengers, crew and aircraft, and safeguarding national security. It presents the response at Amritsar and the Foreign Minister’s travel to Kandahar as decisions made under the information and logistical constraints faced at the time. These are the government’s explanations of its actions, rather than an independent assessment of every decision.

In Parliament, Minister of State for External Affairs Ajit Kumar Panja characterized the outcome this way: “The termination of the hijacking in the manner that it was achieved, was the best possible solution in a basket of worse alternatives.” That is the government’s judgment of the decision, not a neutral description of all possible outcomes.
What does the official statement allege about responsibility?
The Indian government’s statement alleges involvement by Pakistani ISI operatives and Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, saying investigation and interrogation led it to that conclusion. That attribution should be read as the government’s claim: the cited materials do not provide independent corroboration sufficient to present it as an uncontested finding.

How closely does Netflix’s series track the documented record?
Netflix describes IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack as a 2024 limited series of six episodes, inspired by real events and adapted from Flight Into Fear by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury. Netflix’s title page names Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Srivastava as creators; its announcement identifies Sinha as director and says the creative team met officials involved in the response as well as passengers and crew.
| Question | What the parliamentary statement records | What Netflix says about the series |
|---|---|---|
| Chronology | The hijacking began on 24 December 1999; the aircraft reached Kandahar on 25 December, and the crisis ended on 31 December. | Netflix presents a six-episode limited series inspired by real events; the cited series information does not independently verify each scene’s timing or accuracy. |
| Hostages and exchange | The statement records 27 passengers released in Dubai and three prisoners released in the final exchange for all remaining hostages. | Netflix identifies the series as an adaptation of Flight Into Fear; its production description is not a separate verification of how each event is depicted. |
| Source and production context | The parliamentary statement is the Indian government’s account of its response, negotiations and outcome. | Netflix names Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury’s book as source material and says the creative team met people involved in the events. |
The parliamentary record documents the government’s account of the events and its decisions. Netflix’s description establishes the series’ stated source and production context; it does not establish that a particular conversation, portrayal or dramatic scene is an archival record. Treat the series as a dramatization based on real events, and use the 13 March 2000 parliamentary statement when attributing the official account.
