Yes—Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams dated after filming The Notebook, but their real relationship was not simply the film’s romance continued off-screen. Gosling said in a 2007 GQ profile that they had broken up a few months earlier. The available accounts do not establish exact dates or a definitive reason for the split.

Did Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams date in real life?

They did. In GQ’s 2007 profile, Gosling said the relationship began after filming The Notebook had wrapped. By the time of the interview, they were no longer together.

Gosling described McAdams as “one of the great loves of my life,” but cautioned against treating their relationship as a real-life version of the film’s story. “People do Rachel and me a disservice by assuming we were anything like the people in that movie,” he told GQ. He added, “Rachel and my love story is a hell of a lot more romantic than that.”

When did they break up?

Gosling told GQ that the breakup had happened “a few months” before the 2007 interview. The sources available do not establish an exact date for when they began dating or when they separated, so a precise relationship timeline cannot be confirmed.

Why did Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams break up?

Gosling said the breakup was not caused by public attention, but he did not give a fuller explanation in the interview. He remembered the ending this way: “The only thing I remember is we both went down swingin’ and we called it a draw.” That remark does not establish a specific cause, and the available accounts offer no confirmed explanation beyond it.

Did they get along while filming The Notebook?

The accounts describe a difficult start to working together, followed by greater ease on set. They offer context about the production, but they are not evidence of what the actors’ private relationship was like.

Nick Cassavetes’s account of a set disagreement

In a 2014 report, ABC News relayed director Nick Cassavetes’s account of a serious disagreement. Cassavetes said Gosling asked for another actress to read opposite him because he felt he was not getting anything from McAdams. The actors argued with each other in a room with a producer, he said. Cassavetes recalled that Gosling respected McAdams for standing up for her character and that the working relationship became smoother afterward, though not without difficulty. This is Cassavetes’s retrospective description of events on set.

McAdams on filming the story out of order

In an August 2005 interview with BlackFilm.com, McAdams said the production filmed the story’s second half before its beginning. She said that order suited the early scenes, when the characters do not know each other, and meant that she and Gosling were more comfortable by the time they filmed the characters’ romance.
