Anna Stubblefield is no longer in prison. The former Rutgers professor was sentenced to 12 years after a 2015 conviction, but the New Jersey Appellate Division reversed those convictions in 2017 and ordered a new trial. She later pleaded guilty to a lesser third-degree offense and was released after serving approximately two years.

The latest detailed public update found is Netflix Tudum’s June 20, 2024 report: Stubblefield briefly worked as a restaurant server, lost that job because of publicity surrounding the plea bargain, and later did unspecified part-time work from home. Her current location, employer, and exact circumstances in 2026 have not been reliably verified.

The latest detailed public update located is Netflix Tudum’s June 20, 2024 companion article for Tell Them You Love Me. It reported that Stubblefield worked briefly as a restaurant server after her release, lost the job within a year because of publicity surrounding her plea bargain, and later did unspecified part-time work from home.

That is the safest answer to the documentary’s “where is she now?” question. No reliable public source located for this article verifies her current city, employer, residence, or professional role in 2026. She also did not return to her former position as a Rutgers University-Newark philosophy professor.

It is important not to call Stubblefield exonerated. The appellate court ordered a new trial because it found that the original proceedings improperly restricted her ability to present a defense involving facilitated communication and consent. The court did not rule that Derrick Johnson consented, determine who authored the disputed messages, or declare facilitated communication scientifically valid.

How the Anna Stubblefield case began

Before the criminal case, Stubblefield was an associate professor and department chair in Rutgers University-Newark’s philosophy department. Rutgers’ archived faculty information identifies her academic interests as including ethics, race, and disability.

The case began when John Johnson, who had taken one of Stubblefield’s classes, asked whether she could help his brother Derrick communicate. Derrick Johnson was a non-speaking man with cerebral palsy and significant physical and intellectual disabilities, according to the New Jersey Appellate Division’s account of the case.

Stubblefield used a technique known as facilitated communication, or FC, with Derrick. She said that the method enabled him to express complex thoughts through supported typing and that he communicated an ability to consent to a sexual relationship. Derrick’s mother, Daisy Johnson, and his brother disputed that interpretation. They argued that Stubblefield was influencing or producing the messages and had exploited a person who could not consent.

The relationship continued for a period of time. The appellate opinion states that Stubblefield disclosed the sexual relationship to Derrick’s mother and brother in 2011. The family then contacted authorities.

The documentary presents Stubblefield’s account alongside the Johnson family’s objections and commentary from communication experts and advocates. Those perspectives are central to the film, but they should not be treated as interchangeable with findings established by a court.

What facilitated communication means in this case

Facilitated communication involves a facilitator physically supporting or guiding a person’s arm or hand while the person points to letters, a keyboard, pictures, objects, or another communication device. The disputed issue is authorship: whether the message originates with the disabled person, the facilitator, or an unconscious interaction between them.

That question matters because Stubblefield’s consent defense depended heavily on the proposition that Derrick independently authored the typed communications attributed to him. If the facilitator is directing the movement, the resulting messages cannot reliably establish the individual’s thoughts, wishes, or consent.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, or ASHA, states that facilitated communication is a discredited technique that should not be used. Its position is that there is no scientific evidence validating FC and that extensive evidence indicates the facilitator, rather than the person with the disability, authors the messages. ASHA also warns that the technique can undermine agency and generate unverified allegations or decisions.

FC is not the same as AAC

Facilitated communication should not be confused with augmentative and alternative communication, commonly called AAC. AAC is a broad category that includes unaided methods such as gestures, communication boards, and speech-generating devices. Evidence-based AAC approaches are designed to support communication while preserving the user’s independent authorship.

For readers researching disability communication, the responsible distinction is to look for independent communication tools and guidance from qualified speech-language professionals, rather than treating facilitator-dependent typing as an established way to determine another person’s thoughts or consent. These general resources should not be presented as something Derrick Johnson used in the case.

The 2015 conviction and 12-year sentence

In 2015, a New Jersey jury convicted Stubblefield on two counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault involving a physically impaired person.

In January 2016, the trial court imposed two concurrent 12-year prison terms. Each term was subject to an 85% parole-ineligibility period under New Jersey’s No Early Release Act. The sentence also included lifetime parole supervision.

Contemporary reporting also described sex-offender registration as part of the original criminal consequences. The precise present-day registration requirements following the later plea were not verified in an official publicly accessible record for this article, so they should not be stated as a current fact without checking the underlying Essex County court file.

Why were Anna Stubblefield’s convictions overturned?

On June 9, 2017, the New Jersey Appellate Division reversed the convictions and remanded the case for a new trial. The court concluded that the trial judge had improperly restricted testimony and evidence concerning facilitated communication, preventing Stubblefield from fully presenting her theory that Derrick could communicate and consent.

The ruling was about the fairness and constitutional adequacy of the trial. It was not a factual finding that the relationship was consensual. It was also not a scientific endorsement of FC.

This distinction is easy to lose in short summaries of the documentary. A conviction can be reversed because the trial was legally flawed without an appellate court deciding that the defendant’s account is true. The ruling meant that the original convictions could not stand and that the case could proceed to a new trial; it did not establish that Derrick had consented or that Stubblefield was innocent of the underlying allegations.

The plea deal and Stubblefield’s release

After the appellate reversal, Stubblefield accepted a plea agreement to a lesser third-degree offense. Netflix’s official documentary companion describes the charge as lesser and says she was released after serving two years. Some secondary accounts identify the offense as third-degree aggravated criminal sexual contact and describe the sentence as time served, but the precise statutory wording and sentencing consequences should be confirmed against the underlying court records before being presented as definitive.

The essential legal sequence is clear: the original first-degree convictions were reversed, Stubblefield did not serve the imposed 12-year terms in full, and she was released after the later plea. It is therefore inaccurate to say simply that she “served a 12-year sentence.” She was sentenced to 12 years in 2016, but that sentence did not remain the final outcome after the appellate reversal and plea.

The separate $4 million civil lawsuit

Derrick Johnson’s family also pursued civil litigation against Stubblefield and Rutgers. In 2016, a judge awarded the family $4 million in damages.

That award was separate from the criminal case. It was not part of Stubblefield’s prison sentence, and it should not be used as evidence that the criminal court made a particular finding about consent or the authorship of the communications.

The civil litigation involved claims against multiple defendants, including Rutgers, and public court opinions sometimes referred to Derrick using initials or pseudonyms to protect privacy. The documentary identifies him as Derrick Johnson, but coverage should acknowledge why names may differ across court documents.

What Tell Them You Love Me says about her life after prison

The documentary’s official Netflix companion provides the most detailed recent public account located in this research. According to that report, Stubblefield had been suspended by Rutgers before her arrest and did not return to her academic position after the case.

After her release, she obtained work as a restaurant server. Tudum reported that she lost that job within a year because of publicity surrounding the plea bargain. It then described her as doing unspecified part-time work from home.

That report was published on June 20, 2024. It is not a live employment record or a verified account of her circumstances on a particular date in 2026. The available evidence supports saying that this was the last detailed public update located—not that Stubblefield is definitely still working from home.

That makes the film a useful entry point into the controversy, but it is not a substitute for the appellate opinion or scientific literature. The documentary does not, by itself, prove who physically authored every message or resolve Derrick’s subjective experience. The legal record establishes the conviction, reversal, later plea, release, and civil judgment; the meaning and authorship of the communications remain the central disputed issues.

What can—and cannot—be said about Anna Stubblefield in 2026?

Supported by the available record

  • She is no longer serving the 12-year sentence imposed after the 2015 conviction.
  • The convictions were reversed by the New Jersey Appellate Division in 2017.
  • She later pleaded to a lesser third-degree offense and was released after approximately two years in custody.
  • She did not return to her former Rutgers philosophy position.
  • Netflix Tudum reported in June 2024 that she briefly worked as a restaurant server and later did unspecified part-time work from home.

Not reliably verified

  • Her current city or residence.
  • A current employer or confirmed occupation.
  • Whether she is still working from home.
  • A current public-facing academic or professional role.
  • The precise present-day consequences of registration or supervision after the later plea.

Search results also include unrelated people named Anna Stubblefield, including a Kansas school superintendent and other professionals. Those individuals should not be confused with Marjorie Anna Stubblefield, the former Rutgers professor involved in the New Jersey case.

The fairest way to summarize the story

Stubblefield was a Rutgers philosophy professor who believed facilitated communication enabled Derrick Johnson to express complex thoughts and consent to a sexual relationship. Derrick’s family argued that the method was being controlled by the facilitator and that he could not consent. A jury convicted Stubblefield in 2015, but the New Jersey Appellate Division overturned those convictions in 2017 because it found that the trial had improperly limited her defense. She then accepted a lesser plea and was released after about two years.

Today, the public record supports only a limited update: Netflix reported in 2024 that she had moved from a short-lived restaurant job to unspecified part-time work from home. Her exact current circumstances are private and have not been reliably documented.

Sources and terminology

The legal account is based primarily on the New Jersey Appellate Division opinion and Rutgers’ archived faculty information. ASHA’s official position statements provide the scientific and professional context on facilitated communication and its distinction from AAC. Netflix Tudum’s June 20, 2024 article supplies the most recent detailed public account of Stubblefield’s post-release work. Secondary reporting informs some sentencing and civil-litigation details, which are identified cautiously where the underlying official records were not located.

The Bottom Line

Anna Stubblefield is out of prison. Her 2015 convictions were reversed in 2017 because the appellate court found that her defense had been improperly restricted, and she later pleaded to a lesser offense and was released after approximately two years. The latest detailed public update, published by Netflix Tudum in June 2024, said she had briefly worked as a server and then did unspecified part-time work from home. Her current location, employer, and lifestyle have not been reliably verified.
