Carolyn Wiger reached the Final Three on Survivor 44, but she did not win: she finished third behind winner Yam Yam Arocho and runner-up Heidi Lagares-Greenblatt. Her season-long path ran from being underestimated to becoming a central member of the Tika alliance, with a hidden immunity idol play that helped save ally Carson Garrett. Years later, she appeared on The Traitors Season 3 as an initial Traitor and was banished in Episode 9.
What happened to Carolyn Wiger on Survivor?
Wiger began Survivor 44 as an eccentric presence whom other players did not always take seriously. She turned that perception into room to maneuver: she found a hidden immunity idol, built a close working relationship with Yam Yam Arocho and Carson Garrett, and became part of the Tika majority. The season premiered on March 1, 2023, with 18 castaways divided among three tribes, according to CBS’s episode guide.

From underestimated player to Tika ally
In its post-finale recap, Parade describes Wiger using other players’ low expectations to her advantage. She planted a fake idol for Sarah Wade to find and helped use Josh Wilder’s arrival as part of the effort to get him voted out. These moves complemented, rather than replaced, her relationships: her bond with Yam Yam and Carson became the core of Tika’s influence.
The alliance had a fracture
Tika’s success did not mean Wiger was always included. Yam Yam and Carson left her out of the vote that eliminated Frannie Marin, a blindside that strained their working relationship. The group later repaired the relationship and continued together. That moment matters because Wiger’s journey was not a smooth progression from alliance member to finalist; trust within the group had to be restored.

The idol play that protected Carson
Wiger had kept her idol private and eventually revealed it to protect Carson when he was vulnerable. Parade called the move one of the season’s most impressive, an assessment by the outlet rather than an official award. The play captures the dual nature of Wiger’s game: she relied on close relationships, but also made calculated decisions about when to keep information hidden and when to use it.
Did Carolyn Wiger win Survivor?
No. Wiger made the Final Three with Yam Yam and Heidi Lagares-Greenblatt, but Yam Yam won and Wiger placed third. MPR News identifies her as the third-place finisher. CBS lists the finale, “Absolute Banger Season,” for May 24, 2023; its episode synopsis says a castaway would be crowned Sole Survivor, but does not itself name the winner.

How her Survivor game differs from her Traitors role
Wiger’s later appearance on The Traitors Season 3 is a separate chapter, not evidence that success in one format guarantees success in the other. She was selected as one of the initial Traitors and was banished in Episode 9. MPR News reports that she reached that episode, and TheWrap reports the banishment vote was 4-2-1-1.
| What the game asks of players | Survivor | The Traitors |
|---|---|---|
| Information at stake | Players manage alliances and hidden advantages such as an immunity idol. | Players try to identify a concealed faction and role. |
| How players leave | Tribal Council votes determine who is voted out. | Players can be banished by vote or murdered by the Traitors. |
| Social read being tested | Build coalitions while navigating shared survival pressures and shifting votes. | Judge whom to trust while identifying concealed roles. |
The format descriptions follow CBS’s Survivor guide and MPR News’s account of The Traitors. Both shows involve trust and social judgment, but the central problem changes: Wiger’s Survivor alliances were visible relationships she could build and repair, while her Traitors role required concealment of her faction.

How Wiger described being herself on camera
In an MPR News interview, Wiger said: “I’m just so myself, and, like, I don’t put on, like, an act or a character, or I’m not, like, playing it up for the camera or anything like that.” The remark describes her self-presentation, not an absence of strategy: her Survivor season included alliance-building, a fake-idol deception, and deliberate choices about her real idol.

Wiger’s result is best described precisely: she was a Survivor 44 finalist who finished third, not the winner. Her story stands out for the contrast between how some players initially read her and the strategic influence she developed through Tika, as well as for the idol play that protected Carson. The official CBS episode guide dates the finale to May 24, 2023, and the next-day listing for On Fire with Jeff Probst says the final three and winner joined Probst and co-hosts to discuss the season.
