Their best-established shared purpose was preservation—protecting beauty and resisting the decay of time. Sauron did not make or touch them, but they were still bound to the One Ring because their craft drew on knowledge he had taught.
What are the three Elven Rings?
In the books, the Three are the Rings of Power made specifically for the Elves. Their names, traditional associations, stones, and known bearers are distinct, but the lore does not set out a complete catalogue of separate elemental abilities.
| Ring | Association and description | Known bearer sequence |
|---|---|---|
| Narya | Ring of Fire; ruby | Círdan, then Gandalf |
| Nenya | Ring of Water, also called the Ring of Adamant; mithril and adamant | Galadriel |
| Vilya | Ring of Air; gold and sapphire; described as the mightiest of the Three | Gil-galad, then Elrond |
The familiar Ring verse begins, “Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,” as printed in the publisher-hosted Penguin Random House Higher Education entry for The Tolkien Reader. The verse identifies the Three, while the detailed descriptions and bearer sequences are summarized in the specialist reference Tolkien Gateway’s Three Rings entry.
Who has Narya, Nenya, and Vilya?
Narya: Círdan to Gandalf
Círdan held Narya before passing it to Gandalf. The transfer matters: Gandalf was not its original bearer, and the Ring’s history begins with Círdan.

Vilya: Gil-galad to Elrond
Gil-galad held Vilya before it came to Elrond. Vilya is described as the mightiest of the Three; that description does not establish a broader ranking of their battle power.

What powers did the Elven Rings have?
The clearest shared function is preservation: the Three helped ward off the wear of time and preserve beauty. Their keepers used them to sustain places of beauty and refuge. Their names and associations with fire, water, and air do not prove that each Ring had a neatly defined elemental power. The books do not fully specify the individual powers or explain their relationship to the elements, so more detailed ability lists should be treated as interpretation rather than settled canon.
Were the Three Rings controlled by Sauron?
Not in the sense that Sauron personally forged or touched them. Celebrimbor made the Three without Sauron’s direct participation. But their makers used knowledge gained from Sauron while making the earlier Rings of Power, so the Three remained subject to the One Ring’s controlling power. “Unsullied” by Sauron’s direct hand does not mean independent of the system he created.

The keepers removed their Rings when Sauron made the One. After his defeat, the Three could be worn openly. Their power nevertheless depended on the One: when it was destroyed, the Three lost their power. This is why the story is not simply a contrast between wholly good Elven Rings and an evil One Ring—the Three were made with a different intention, yet could not escape their connection to it.
Where to read the wider history
The Silmarillion provides the wider history of the Elder Days behind the events of The Lord of the Rings. The Tolkien Estate’s page reproduces Christopher Tolkien’s introduction to the 1977 publication, in which he calls it “the central stock of that great imaginative enterprise from which The Lord of the Rings was derived.” He also describes it as part of the long story ending with the departure of the Ringbearers. Readers seeking the larger context can start with the Tolkien Estate’s presentation of Christopher Tolkien’s introduction and consult an edition of The Silmarillion.
