Released on Netflix on April 4, 2024, it follows Nica and Rigel, two young people from the same orphanage who are adopted by one family and must confront a painful history alongside unexpected feelings.
What is The Tearsmith about?
Nica loses her parents and grows up at Sunnycreek, an austere orphanage known as the Grave. There, she hears a legend about the Tearsmith, a mysterious figure said to have brought tears and intense feelings to a world without emotion.
At seventeen, Nica enters an adoption process with the Milligan family. She discovers that Rigel, an orphanage peer with whom she has a difficult history, is being adopted into the same household. Their shared past, grief and developing feelings form the story’s emotional center.
That is the setup, not an account of the ending. Netflix’s official synopsis describes Nica and Rigel as realizing that “unexpected but irresistible feelings pull them together” after their adoption.
