What the story establishes about Hikaru and the being
The Summer Hikaru Died adapts Mokumokuren’s manga. Childhood friends Yoshiki Tsujinaka and Hikaru Indo live in a rural Japanese village. After Hikaru dies in the mountains, a supernatural being takes his form. Yoshiki recognizes that the person who returned is not the same friend, but stays close to him. The premise brings horror together with grief, identity and coming-of-age themes.
That distinction matters when readers talk about “Hikaru’s” feelings. Hikaru Indo is the friend who died; the being is the presence now using his body and identity. Treating them as one person can make an unresolved question sound like a settled fact.
Were the being’s feelings officially confirmed?
Not by the source reviewed here. In her April 8, 2026 Crunchyroll feature, Briana Lawrence asks whether the current Hikaru’s feelings for Yoshiki belong to the being or are remnants of the deceased Hikaru. The feature does not cite a creator statement or a manga chapter and page that definitively answers that question. It therefore does not support the claim that the feelings were “officially confirmed”—or that fans missed a canonical declaration.

Lawrence’s question is interpretation by the feature’s author, not a quotation from Mokumokuren. The distinction is important: a publication discussing an ambiguity is not evidence that the creator has resolved it.
Why the question is easy to misread
The being has Hikaru’s appearance and occupies a relationship shaped by the dead boy’s history with Yoshiki. That makes it natural to wonder whether its feelings are its own, inherited from Hikaru, or bound up with both. Yoshiki’s side is also complicated: his attachment may involve the friend he lost, the being beside him, or both.

The story’s emotional force comes partly from holding those possibilities together. Its horror premise makes identity uncertain, while Yoshiki’s continued closeness to the being gives that uncertainty intimate stakes. An interpretation of their relationship may be persuasive without being an official confirmation.
