The Swan: Behind the Mirror recounts the punishing makeover tactics behind Fox’s 2004 reality competition, but Naomi Fry’s critique is that it stops short of confronting the beauty culture that made the show seem plausible—and gives its contestants’ reunion a resolution that feels too tidy.
What The Swan: Behind the Mirror covers
Directed by Erin Lee Carr, the Hulu documentary looks back at The Swan, Fox’s 2004 makeover competition. The original series transformed women through cosmetic procedures and other demanding interventions, then put them in a televised beauty pageant. Carr’s interviews include former contestants, some producers and a surgeon who operated on participants, according to Naomi Fry’s New Yorker review. Vanity Fair’s interview with Carr likewise describes testimony from contestants, crew members and surgeon Randal Haworth.
Fry recounts accounts of crash diets, strenuous exercise, multiple cosmetic surgeries and contestants being kept from mirrors. The transformed women then competed in a pageant. These are experiences as described in the review, not an independent audit of the production or a claim that every contestant had the same experience.
Why Fry calls the reckoning superficial
Fry’s objection is not that the documentary hides the harm. Rather, she argues that it can make The Swan look like an isolated production gone wrong, without sufficiently placing it alongside the makeover and appearance-focused television of the same period. That wider context matters: the series did not invent the era’s fixation on transformation, but it turned that fixation into a televised contest.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The documentary also spends more energy, in Fry’s reading, on the production’s tactics than on the assumptions beneath them: that women should be remade through cosmetic procedures, and that their results should be ranked in a beauty competition. The result is a portrait of cruelty that does not fully interrogate why this premise could be packaged as entertainment.
Empowerment against competition
The show’s language of empowerment sits uneasily beside its structure. Contestants were asked to endure physical discipline and cosmetic work, then compete against one another after their makeovers. Vanity Fair quotes Carr reflecting on that contradiction: “How can you make a show about the transformation and empowerment of women by making them compete against each other, and then making them parade in outfits not of their choosing before a television audience?”

The New Yorker review quotes creator Nely Galán describing the pageant as a motivator: “I wanted to give the women such a big motivator so they would do the work. What is a bigger motivator than being in front of thirty million people in a beauty pageant in your bathing suit and in lingerie? It’s enough to kill yourself.” The “thirty million” figure belongs to Galán’s reported quotation; it is not independently established as an audience measurement here.
Does the reunion provide closure?
Fry finds the documentary’s Los Angeles reunion and feel-good resolution overly neat. The former contestants’ continuing support for one another is meaningful, but Fry notes that they still use the show’s language of perfection. That tension makes the reunion less conclusive than a simple story of harm overcome: the participants can have built a sisterhood while the ideals that shaped the competition remain present in how they describe it.

One participant, as quoted by Fry, captures the gap between the show’s promise and its aftermath: “It could have been a beautiful story, but it turned into a reality nightmare.” The documentary’s ending, in Fry’s view, softens rather than fully resolves that contradiction.

The film offers testimony about what participants and people involved remember, and it makes the production’s makeover-and-pageant machinery visible. Fry’s criticism is that this accounting remains narrower than the subject demands: a deeper reckoning would connect those reported tactics to the wider culture of beauty and reality television, and examine the competition premise itself rather than treating it mainly as an especially damaging show.

Vanity Fair reported that the two-season series’ legacy is still emotionally complicated, including the appeal of being selected despite the cost. Its account complements the review’s emphasis on contestants’ testimony, while Fry is more skeptical of the documentary’s cultural analysis and closing reunion. For a viewing note, the documentary is identified as a Hulu work by both outlets; Vanity Fair reported a September 29, 2026 start date. Catalog availability can vary by region and change over time.
