Yes—Nintendo and Illumination officially announced a new animated film in the Super Mario world on March 10, 2024. It is titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, not simply Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. Its theatrical release dates have now passed: Nintendo’s US-facing page lists April 1, 2026, while the Japan release was April 24, 2026.
What is the official title?
The follow-up is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Nintendo and Illumination announced the title on September 12, 2025. The earlier phrase “Super Mario Bros. Movie 2” is a convenient description, not the film’s official title.
The film is based on the world of Super Mario Bros. Nintendo and Illumination are producing it, and Universal Pictures is its worldwide theatrical distributor. Nintendo’s film page carries the US-facing title and release listing.
When did it come out?
The dates were different by territory, and the original US date changed. As of October 7, 2026, the listed theatrical dates are in the past.

| Territory or announcement | Date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| United States, current Nintendo listing | April 1, 2026 | Nintendo’s US-facing movie page lists this as the US theatrical date. |
| Japan | April 24, 2026 | Nintendo’s September 2025 announcement named this date for Japan. |
| Select other territories | Throughout April 2026 | Nintendo said releases in select territories would take place during the month; it did not give one date for every market. |
| Original US plan, March 2024 | April 3, 2026 | This was the initial planned US date, later superseded by the April 1 date on Nintendo’s US-facing page. |
The March 10, 2024 Nintendo and Illumination announcement said the film was planned for April 3, 2026 in the US and many additional markets, with select territories releasing throughout April. Nintendo’s September 12, 2025 title announcement later listed April 3 for the US and many markets, April 24 for Japan, and April releases in select territories. The US-facing movie page now lists April 1, so that is the date to use for the US listing rather than the earlier plan.
Who made the film, and who is in the voice cast?
Nintendo and Illumination announced Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo as producers. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic returned as directors, Matthew Fogel wrote the screenplay, and Brian Tyler returned to compose the score.
