The first reactions to James Gunn’s Superman (2025) were strongly positive overall, with praise for its humor, action, emotion, optimism and lead performances. They were not unanimous: some early viewers criticized the storytelling, uneven tone and crowded plot. The reactions are selected comments from premiere attendees and commentators—not a representative poll or a measured approval percentage.
What are the first reactions to Superman (2025)?
TheWrap and Variety published first-reaction roundups on July 8, 2025, after the film’s July 7 world premiere in Hollywood and the lifting of the social-media embargo. Both described an enthusiastic first wave, though Variety also included distinctly negative comments. TheWrap’s roundup drew on posts from journalists and entertainment commentators including Germain Lussier, Jenna Anderson, Sean Chandler, Erik Voss, Bill Bria, Chris Evangelista and Eric Goldman. TheWrap’s July 8 roundup and Variety’s July 8 roundup capture the range.
The positive comments often described the film as an energetic, colorful, heartfelt and playful comic-book adventure. Several singled out David Corenswet’s performance as Superman; some also praised his chemistry with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. A comparison to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films appeared in some reactions, referring to the movie’s lively, playful superhero energy—not to a settled consensus about the film.
What did viewers praise?
Humor, action and emotion
TheWrap’s selections emphasized the combination of action, humor and feeling. Reactions described the movie as a joyride and celebrated its earnestness, comic-book spirit, colorful visuals and optimism. These comments suggest that many early viewers responded to a deliberately bright, emotionally open take on Superman rather than a more solemn superhero story.

Corenswet and Brosnahan
Variety highlighted praise for Corenswet’s sincerity and strength in the title role, alongside comments on his chemistry with Brosnahan. Their performances were among the clearest points of agreement in the positive reactions, although a favorable response to the actors did not mean every viewer felt the story gave its characters or ideas enough room.
What reservations appeared in the first wave?
The early coverage was not unanimous. Variety included Peter Howell’s criticism of the storytelling, as well as a reaction arguing that the film favored style over substance. Other reservations concerned uneven tone and a plot that could feel crowded with characters or ideas. In short, some viewers found the movie exuberant and comic-book-like; others saw that same abundance as distracting or narratively unfocused.

Those criticisms should be kept alongside the praise rather than treated as an exception that cancels it out. “Overwhelmingly positive” describes the tenor of the selected reactions reported in these roundups, not every attendee’s view and not a statistically measured result.
First reactions are not the same as full reviews
The July 8 stories covered brief social reactions following the premiere. Rotten Tomatoes’ later July first-review roundup drew on fuller reviews and described many of the same strengths—lead performance, chemistry, colorful visuals and comic-book plotting—while also noting concerns about crowded characters and ideas, tone and storytelling. Those later reviews are a separate stage of response; they should not be combined with premiere posts as if both formed one poll. Rotten Tomatoes’ first-review roundup provides that later critical context.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. DC described it as DC Studios’ first feature film for the big screen, framing Gunn’s version around action, humor, heart, compassion and belief in human goodness. Its original theatrical release schedule was July 9, 2025, internationally, and July 11 in the United States and Canada, including IMAX; these are historical dates, not current showtimes. DC’s official film page lists the credits and release information.

In a July 18, 2025 interview with DC, Gunn connected the film’s treatment of journalism to his admiration for truth-seeking: “Journalism is important to me,” Gunn shares. “If I give to charitable organizations, it’s animals and journalists. I think that people who are relentless in pursuit of the truth—the actual truth—are heroes, and it’s something I admire greatly.” The DC interview with Gunn and Brosnahan also discusses Lois Lane’s role as a journalist and Superman’s counterpart.
