The Running Man drew broadly positive early reactions for Glen Powell’s charismatic lead performance and its energetic action, but the enthusiasm came with caveats. Some viewers and critics questioned the ending, pacing and crowded cast, while a published review argued that the film’s satire and tonal balance fall short. The clearest verdict: it looks like lively, accessible action, but may not satisfy everyone looking for either Edgar Wright at his most inventive or Stephen King’s bleakest edge.

What are the first reactions to The Running Man?

Early screening reactions leaned upbeat, praising the film as entertaining and action-forward, with Powell’s performance a recurring bright spot. Some reactions also welcomed its emotional element and its adaptation of King’s story. That enthusiasm was not universal: one response cited in CinemaBlend’s roundup found the film long and its cast too large. These were reactions from early screenings, not a representative audience poll.

Selected reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes Editorial likewise describe a film with considerable entertainment value. Some reviewers recognize Wright’s characteristic editing and music choices; others find the result less distinctive than his strongest work. The roundup also flags reservations about the ending. The responses therefore suggest more than a simple thumbs-up: viewers may enjoy the momentum and star appeal while disagreeing about how well the film’s pieces come together.

Does the movie live up to the hype?

That depends on what the hype promises. If you want a fast-moving action adaptation led by a charismatic star, early responses suggest the film has the ingredients to deliver. If you expect a consistently sharp Edgar Wright film, or a relentlessly dark and uncompromising version of King’s story, the reservations about style, tone and ending matter more.

Associated Press reviewer Jake Coyle provides a useful counterweight to the early buzz. He acknowledges Powell’s charisma, forward momentum and flashes of flamboyance, but argues that the satire lacks bite and that the film struggles to balance violent science fiction with farce. That criticism points to the central divide: the film’s energy may carry it for some viewers, while others may find its tonal shifts blunt the satire or emotional impact.

How faithful is it to Stephen King’s book?

The 2025 film adapts King’s 1982 novel, originally published under his Richard Bachman pen name. King’s official film record lists Edgar Wright as director, Wright and Michael Bacall as writers, and Paramount Pictures as distributor. It describes a contestant entering a game show in which participants can go anywhere in the world while hired hunters pursue them.

In a BFI interview, Wright described his film as closer to the novel than the 1987 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. He said the earlier film used the book’s setup but left much of its story unadapted. That makes the 2025 film a more direct choice for readers curious about King’s original premise, though fidelity alone does not settle whether its tone or ending works.

The film also avoids specifying the year in which its dystopian future takes place. Wright told BFI, “In the movie, we don’t say what year it is,” explaining that he avoids dating dystopian futures because films can fail to imagine far enough ahead. King, for his part, told BFI: “I think things worked out really well. Sometimes you just ride with an angel, so to speak. And my angel was Edgar Wright.”

Who is likely to enjoy it—and who might not?

  • It may suit you if you want a brisk, star-led action film, enjoy Powell’s screen presence, or are interested in a version of the story that Wright describes as more faithful to King’s novel than the 1987 adaptation.
  • You may be less convinced if you expect the satire to be especially incisive, prefer a steadier blend of comedy and violence, or want Wright’s most distinctive stylistic work. The reported concerns about the ending and length may also matter if pacing is a priority.
