The Super Mario Galaxy Movie delivers the broader, galaxy-spanning adventure Keegan-Michael Key teased in 2024, along with a dense run of callbacks and familiar characters. But the finished film’s abundance is a mixed proposition: the Associated Press highlights specific surprises while noting that the story does not fully inhabit the Galaxy games’ worlds; Nintendo Life finds the cameos and references plentiful enough to crowd the experience.
Often called The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 before its official title was announced, the film is the released follow-up to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
What Key promised—and what the film became
In an October 2024 interview, Toad voice actor Keegan-Michael Key said the sequel would be “a little broader in scope” and that “where it takes place is very intriguing lore.” He also anticipated “some really fantastic Easter eggs” and hinted at “deep cuts,” according to GameSpot’s report of his interview with Men’s Journal. Those were a cast member’s pre-release hints, not an official plot summary or a promise to give every era of Mario games equal space.
The official title, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, was announced by Nintendo and Illumination in September 2025. Their announcement described it as a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. and a follow-up to the 2023 movie. Nintendo cited the first film’s worldwide earnings as more than $1.3 billion. Nintendo’s title announcement also set the project apart from the informal “Movie 2” label used in earlier coverage.

How the released film broadens the adventure
Universal’s spoiler-light synopsis begins with Mario and Luigi solving everyday problems in the Mushroom Kingdom. They meet Yoshi, try to reform a miniaturized Bowser, and anticipate Peach’s birthday party. A call for help then sends the group across the galaxy, where they encounter new worlds, Rosalina and Bowser Jr. Universal lists the runtime as 1 hour 39 minutes and the US rating as PG for action, mild violence and rude humor. Universal’s film page provides the synopsis and rating.
The larger setting comes with an expanded ensemble. Nintendo’s March 2026 cast announcement lists Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. New additions include Donald Glover as Yoshi, Brie Larson as Rosalina, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Issa Rae as Honey Queen and Luis Guzmán as Wart; Kevin Michael Richardson returns as Kamek. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic returned to direct, Matthew Fogel wrote the screenplay, and Brian Tyler returned to compose. Nintendo’s cast announcement names the performers and crew.

What the Easter eggs add—and what they cannot guarantee
The film’s references range from prominent character appearances to details recognizable to players. The Associated Press reviewer Lindsey Bahr calls out Star Fox, the father-son dynamic between Bowser and Bowser Jr., and a sequence that juxtaposes Mario’s 8-bit form with 3D animation. Bahr also notes fan criticism that the movie does not stay fully within the Galaxy games’ worlds. These are observations from her review, not a studio-issued checklist of Easter eggs. Read Bahr’s Associated Press review.
Nintendo Life reviewer Ollie Reynolds describes a rapid succession of set pieces and plentiful cameos and references, including Piantas, Conkdors and Gearmos in the Gateway Galaxy. He criticizes the overstuffed approach while praising aspects of the visuals, music and Easter eggs. His review suggests the same density can be both part of the appeal and a source of clutter. These two reviews offer different emphases, not a measured verdict from all critics or viewers. A useful way to think about the film is to separate recognition from storytelling: a cameo or visual callback may reward someone who knows the games, but its presence alone does not establish how well the film develops its plot or welcomes a viewer unfamiliar with the reference.
