The English version is his own rendering, which Broadview Press describes as a “transcreation.” Its warning is aimed at a nation consumed by greed, pride and the desire to dominate; its alternative is a patient, humble peace and “the freedom of the soul.”
When Tagore wrote the poem—and when it appeared in English
The poem’s heading says it was written in Bengali on the last day of the century. Broadview identifies that date as the last day of the nineteenth century. That is the composition date given by the poem’s heading; it should not be confused with the later publication of its English version.
Tagore made the English version himself. Broadview says it appeared in 1917 in a literary journal and as the postscript to Nationalism, a collection based on lectures he delivered the previous year. Broadview does not name the journal or provide its issue date. Lehigh University’s digitized text of Nationalism includes the poem at the end.
Broadview notes that the English publication coincided with the United States entering World War I. That timing offers context for readers of the 1917 version, but it does not mean the poem was written in response to the war: its heading places its composition at the end of 1899.

What the sunset and funeral-pyre imagery means
The opening sunset is no gentle end-of-day scene. Blood-red clouds, hatred, steel and vengeance establish a world of conflict. The poem then makes the Nation—personified as a consuming force—the center of its critique. It has “made the world its food”: a country’s appetite for power and possession expands until its very excess brings destruction.
The poem’s red light on the horizon is not the dawn of peace. It is a funeral pyre, consuming “the self-love of the Nation.” The distinction matters: a fiery spectacle might look like a new beginning, but the poem presents it as the death of national vanity. The true morning remains beyond the darkness, “Meek and silent.” Read this as a contrast between violent, ostentatious power and renewal that requires patience and restraint, not as a claim that the poem’s speaker has already reached a peaceful dawn.

Is the poem against nationalism?
The poem condemns national self-love, greed, pride and excess; it is not simply a rejection of every attachment to one’s country. Its target is a nation that treats the world as something to consume and measures greatness by size or power. The warning is directed at an aggressive, acquisitive kind of nationalism, rather than at all forms of collective belonging.
That distinction is visible in the poem’s turn toward India. “Keep watch, India” is an appeal to vigilance, followed by an invitation to welcome Peace as a divine daughter born of suffering. The poem imagines a national future, but one founded on humility and inward freedom rather than domination.

The poem’s ethical alternative
In its closing movement, the poem names values that oppose the Nation’s insatiable appetite: contentment, fortitude, meekness, humility and simplicity. Its concluding lines make the contrast explicit: “Let your crown be of humility, your freedom the freedom of the soul,” and “what is huge is not great and pride is not everlasting.” The measure of a nation, in this vision, is not its scale or power but the character and freedom it allows people to cultivate.

Lehigh’s digitized copy of Nationalism presents the poem in five numbered sections. They move from sunset and hatred, through the Nation’s appetite and the funeral-pyre, to the waiting dawn, the invocation to Peace and the final address to India. Tagoreweb presents the poem with line breaks but without the same numbered divisions, so the five-part arrangement describes Lehigh’s edition, not a universal stanza scheme.
