Spoilers throughout. The Woman is best understood as Ramona’s self-destructive “shadow”—her depression, guilt and suicidal thoughts given a physical form—not as a ghost whose origin the film explains. But the ending does not confirm whether Ramona survives. The final reunion can be read as a hopeful return to her children or as an idealized vision after she gives in to the Woman.
Who was the Woman in The Woman in the Yard?
The Woman represents the part of Ramona that urges her toward death. The film never names her as a separate supernatural being with a clear backstory; instead, the apparition gives shape to Ramona’s grief, guilt and impulse to disappear. In its ending analysis, SYFY Wire connects the Woman’s appearances to moments when Ramona wanted out of her life, including when she prayed for strength. In this reading, that prayer can mean a wish to let go of life, rather than simply a request for strength to endure.
Director Jaume Collet-Serra described the concept through Carl Jung’s idea of a “shadow self.” In production notes reproduced by SYFY Wire, he said: “Carl Jung, in his psychoanalytic theory, exposed that we all have a shadow self, a dark side in our unconscious that is always judging us … It knows all of our secrets. If we give power to that side of ourselves, we can end up in a downward spiral where nothing makes sense.” That framing makes the Woman an embodiment of what Ramona is struggling to face, not proof that the story has established a literal ghost.
What happens in the ending?
Ramona is grieving the death of her husband, David, in a car accident. The ending is bound up with her guilt: she was driving, and she had been thinking about leaving her family. As the Woman presses her to believe her children would be better off without her, Ramona tells them to flee to a nearby farm.

Ramona then sits in the Woman’s chair. The Woman guides David’s gun beneath Ramona’s chin, and their figures merge in shadow. The film cuts away before showing or audibly confirming a gunshot. It then presents images that look like a happy reunion: the children return, the lights are on, and the family property bears the sign “Iris Haven.” Ramona’s self-portrait is nearly finished. Yet the portrait’s green veil and the name “Ramona” written backward make the scene feel uncanny, while David’s voice returns with, “I had the most amazing dream…”
Does Ramona survive?
The film leaves the outcome unresolved. The ending gives viewers evidence for both survival and death, but no definitive confirmation of either.

The hopeful reading
Ramona resists the Woman and reunites with her children. The children’s return, the lit home, the “Iris Haven” sign and the nearly completed portrait can suggest renewal and a chance to keep fighting her depression. The reversed signature and veil need not mean she has died; they can signal that the threat remains part of her inner life rather than vanishing.
The bleak reading
Ramona dies by suicide, and the reunion is an idealized vision of her children flourishing without her. The gun beneath her chin and the shadow merger lead into a cutaway that never shows what happens. The portrait, backward signature and David’s dream-like voice add to the possibility that the apparent return is not reality.

Screenwriter Sam Stefanak favors hope, but does not present his interpretation as definitive. In an interview with SYFY Wire, he said his original drafts were more explicit: “My original drafts, I’ll admit, are not as ambiguous; they are very clear about overcoming depression and your mental health struggles.” He described his own response to the finished film this way: “I do have my opinion on what happened — not that it’s correct or anything, but when I see the finished product, I find hope.”
Stefanak also said Collet-Serra wanted the ambiguity preserved: “Jaume wanted that uncomfortable ambiguity to be present in the ending, and it has been really interesting to see.” The unresolved fate is therefore part of the film’s design, not a missing on-screen confirmation that can be settled from the scene alone.
