Ike Barinholtz’s role as Sal Saperstein in Apple TV+’s The Studio draws on a career built in comedy and years spent around the business of making movies and television. But sharing a scene with Martin Scorsese brought a different challenge: Barinholtz had to play Sal while trying not to let his own admiration for the filmmaker take over.
Who Ike Barinholtz plays in The Studio
The Studio is an Apple TV+ comedy about a struggling Hollywood movie studio and its newly appointed head of film production, played by Seth Rogen. Barinholtz plays Sal Saperstein, one of the figures navigating that fictional workplace. TV Insider places the part in a comedy career that includes MADtv and The Mindy Project.
Sal is a character, not a documentary portrait of Barinholtz. Still, the actor has spent time on the other side of the studio conversations his character inhabits. In a Variety interview, he described roughly “20 years or so” of selling and pitching movies, making movies and television, and meeting studio people. That is his approximate account of his own experience—not an independently measured career statistic—and it offers a practical point of connection to Sal’s world.
Why the Scorsese scene felt different
Barinholtz has described the scene with Scorsese as both exciting and difficult. He admired the director, but had to keep that reaction separate from Sal’s behavior in the moment. As he told GQ, “That was a day I’ll just never forget. That might be the highlight.” The remark captures a personal high point, not a claim that the encounter changed his career.

Variety recounts that Barinholtz and the team were looking for a funny line for Sal to say to Scorsese. Scorsese’s reported answer turned the setup back on him: “Well, people always say to me, ‘You’re the reason I’m here.’” It is a compact joke about the director’s influence—and a moment in which the real filmmaker’s presence supplied the punchline.
The comedy rhythm between Sal and Rogen
Barinholtz’s comic history also matters to how Sal works opposite Rogen’s character. Backstage discusses the generational friction between Sal and Quinn, alongside the longstanding comedic rhythm between Barinholtz and Rogen. In Barinholtz’s recollection of the set, Scorsese praised their chemistry: “You guys are great. You’re like Abbott and Costello.” That comparison is Scorsese’s reported comment as recalled by Barinholtz in the Backstage interview, rather than an independently recorded statement.

The pairing helps explain why the scene can be more than a celebrity cameo: it puts Barinholtz’s practiced comic timing alongside his genuine awe, while the show keeps the focus on Sal’s place in the studio’s fictional ecosystem.
How Scorsese joined the show
The path to Scorsese’s appearance, as described by the production team, began with a part written for him and sent for his consideration. In a Concrete Playground interview, producer James Weaver recalled that Scorsese agreed to appear and that his participation helped the team approach other potential guests. This is the creators’ account of casting, distinct from Barinholtz’s account of what it felt like to perform with the director.
