The emotional image was Not Alone, the winning artwork in Google’s 2022 Doodle for Google student contest. Created by Florida high-school student Sophie Araque-Liu, it showed a daughter embracing her mother and appeared on Google’s U.S. homepage on August 16, 2022—not August 18, 2026. Its message was that accepting support can be part of caring for yourself.
What was the image on Google’s homepage?
Not Alone showed a daughter holding her mother in a close embrace. The artwork was adapted into Google’s logo for the homepage, where the image of two people supporting one another stood out from the page’s usual spare design. It was not a routine Google illustration: it was the winning entry in the 2022 Doodle for Google student contest. Contemporary coverage by BGR reported that it appeared on August 16, 2022.
The report concerns Google’s U.S. homepage appearance on that date. It does not establish that the same artwork is currently displayed, or that users in every country and on every Google interface saw it.
Who created “Not Alone”?
Sophie Araque-Liu, a Florida high-school student at the time, created the artwork and won the 2022 contest. The prompt invited students to finish the phrase “I care for myself by…” Araque-Liu answered with an idea that ran against the notion that self-care must be done alone: letting other people offer care.

What does “Not Alone” mean?
The embrace gives the title a literal image, while the contest prompt connects it to emotional wellbeing. The work presents acknowledging difficulty, reaching out to trusted people and accepting their support as possible forms of self-care. Its message is personal and artistic, not a clinical claim that loved ones’ support is enough to treat a mental-health condition.
The personal experience behind the artwork
Araque-Liu drew on her own experience of struggling mentally and feeling embarrassed or afraid to tell friends and family. She described opening up and receiving love and support; that experience informed her decision to make asking for help the focus of her entry. The artwork turns that private shift—from keeping difficulty hidden to letting others in—into a simple scene of physical closeness.

Why did Google feature it, and what did the winner receive?
Google featured Not Alone because it won the national 2022 Doodle for Google contest. Contemporary coverage said the judges praised its thoughtfulness, emotional impact and artistry. The same coverage reported that Araque-Liu received a $30,000 college scholarship and that her school received a $50,000 technology package. Those are reported 2022 awards, not a statement of the contest’s current prize rules.

Why the image felt so affecting
- A familiar relationship: A parent and child embracing communicates comfort quickly, without needing a long explanation.
- A candid message: The image treats asking for help as an act of care rather than a sign of weakness.
- An unexpected setting: People visiting a search homepage for practical tasks could encounter an intimate, emotionally direct image instead. That contrast may help explain why it caught attention, though it does not establish how many people saw or responded to it.
