Spoilers for the season-one finale, “The Wrath of Mulgarath.” The ending gives the Grace family a moment of acceptance, then reveals that the Jared who remains with them is Mulgarath in disguise. Mallory’s split-second choice sends the real Jared into Faerie, where he meets his great-uncle Arthur Spiderwick. Showrunner Aron Eli Coleite said the identity-switch idea came from Tony DiTerlizzi and described several possible directions for a second season—but those ideas do not confirm that another season was ordered.
What happens at the end of The Spiderwick Chronicles?
Before the final twist, the Grace family has faced a town-wide sleeping sickness and summoned a troll that appears to kill the shapeshifting ogre Mulgarath. But the family still has to decide what to do about Mulgarath’s baby dragon. Jared initially argues that they should kill it, then changes his mind during a family conversation. The family chooses to let the dragon live.
That choice gives the finale an emotional resolution before it introduces a new danger. Coleite said the acceptance moment was important to the season because it reflects accepting yourself and being accepted by others. He described the family’s realization this way: “It’s a family moment of realizing, it’s not just you. It’s all of us. We all push you to this place. We all take a part in this.” Coleite also said one of the series’ goals was “to de-stigmatize mental health issues or neurodiversity.” In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, republished by Yahoo Entertainment on April 21, 2024, he connected the family’s acceptance of Jared to the way they recognize their own part in what he has been through.

After the family’s decision about the dragon, a second Jared appears and insists that the other boy is an impostor. Mallory has to choose quickly. The Jared she sends away is the real one: he is transported to Faerie and encounters his great-uncle Arthur Spiderwick. The Jared left in the human world is Mulgarath, who has taken Jared’s form.

Coleite called the decision “a really heightened, tense moment.” He credited DiTerlizzi with pitching the idea that Jared would face another version of himself and that the wrong Jared would be sent away. A republished interview excerpt from April 22, 2024 adds that Coleite, Holly Black, and DiTerlizzi discussed the cliffhanger early. Coleite linked the twist to Mulgarath becoming Jared in the books and said the Vorpal Sword offered a way to send Jared into Faerie, echoing how Arthur had been tricked. The available interview accounts explain those adaptation choices, but do not establish a full scene-by-scene comparison with the books.

Coleite described possibilities, not a confirmed season-two storyline. His ideas extend the cliffhanger in two directions: the family must live with Mulgarath impersonating Jared, while the real Jared tries to get out of Faerie.
- The impostor at home: Mulgarath could remain in Jared’s place for months or even years before the family realizes what happened, giving their eventual discovery a major emotional impact.

- Jared’s escape from Faerie: Jared would have to find a way out of a beautiful realm where the elves will not let him leave, even though his family needs him in the human world. Coleite said, “I think we would love to tell our version of a prison escape story.”
Coleite’s April 2024 interview presented these as ideas for what the story could become. The available information does not establish whether the series was renewed or canceled as of October 7, 2026, so the cliffhanger’s possible continuation should not be mistaken for confirmation of a second season.
