The Sound of Music is based on a real family, but its musical and film versions reshape the history. The von Trapps did not flee Austria on foot over the Alps: they left by train for Italy in 1938. The screen story also compresses more than a decade, changes the children’s identities and presents Georg as far more forbidding than the father described in historical accounts.

How much of The Sound of Music is true?

The musical and 1965 film draw on the first part of Maria von Trapp’s 1949 memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. The Salzburg Museum traces the adaptations from Maria’s books and German films to the 1959 Broadway musical and the Hollywood film. They tell a real family’s story, but they are adaptations, not documentary accounts. The National Archives recommends Maria’s memoir as a firsthand source.

The broad outline is historical: Maria joined the family, the von Trapps performed as singers, and they left Austria after its annexation by Germany. But the adaptation rearranges the timeline, family details and personalities—and changes the route of their departure.

How did the real family’s story differ from the film?

Subject Historical account Musical and film version
Maria’s arrival In 1926 she came to tutor one child, also named Maria, while the girl recovered from scarlet fever. She is presented as governess to the whole family.
Marriage Maria and Georg married in 1927, eleven years before the family left Austria. The romance and marriage are placed close to the 1938 crisis.
Children There were ten children: Georg’s seven children from his first marriage and three he had with Maria. Names, ages, sexes and birth order among the older children differ from the adaptation. The story centers on seven children with altered identities.
Georg The National Archives describes him as a warmhearted parent who enjoyed musical activities with his family. He begins as a stern father who suppresses music. The family’s FAQ says the children were hurt by this portrayal.
Music Music was already part of family life. Maria taught madrigals, and the family won a prize at the 1936 Salzburg Music Festival. Music serves as a sudden transformation, and the festival falls within the adaptation’s compressed timeline.
Departure The family left by train for Italy, then traveled onward to London and the United States. The family escapes on foot over the Alps toward Switzerland.

When did Maria join the family, and when did she marry Georg?

Maria arrived in 1926 to tutor Georg’s daughter Maria during her recovery from scarlet fever. She did not arrive as governess to all the children. Maria and Georg married in 1927—well before the political crisis that prompted the family to leave Austria in 1938.

That gap is central to the difference between history and drama. The film brings Maria’s arrival, the romance, the marriage and the family’s departure into one dramatic stretch; in real life, the marriage preceded their departure by eleven years.

Why did the von Trapps become professional singers?

The family’s musical life did not begin with Maria’s arrival. She taught madrigals, and singing became professional work after the family’s finances were badly affected by the worldwide depression and the failure of their bank in the early 1930s. In 1936 they won a prize at the Salzburg Music Festival.

So the adaptation’s musical turning point is a storytelling device, not a literal account of a family discovering music together. The family had already made music at home before it became a way to earn a living.

Did the von Trapps really escape over the Alps?

No. The family left by train for Italy, not by hiking over the Alps to Switzerland. They traveled with their musical conductor, Reverend Franz Wasner, and secretary, Martha Zochbauer. The National Archives says they later went to London and sailed to New York in September 1938 for a concert tour.

Daughter Maria recalled the departure in a 2003 interview in Opera News, quoted by National Archives archivist Joan Gearin: “We did tell people that we were going to America to sing. And we did not climb over mountains with all our heavy suitcases and instruments. We left by train, pretending nothing.” Gearin identifies the interview as appearing in Opera News 67 (May 2003), page 44.

The train journey is also a better fit for the circumstances described in the historical account: the family left with companions and luggage, then continued through Europe before sailing to the United States. Their son Johannes was born in Philadelphia in January 1939.

Why did the family leave Austria in 1938?

After Germany annexed Austria, Georg refused requests to fly the Nazi flag at the family home, take a naval command and sing at Hitler’s birthday celebration. The National Archives says the family weighed those demands and the opportunities offered by the regime against leaving their home and possessions, and decided they could not compromise their principles.

This was not simply a last-minute escape from a single dramatic threat. The family faced a set of demands that conflicted with its principles and chose to leave, giving up its home and possessions.

What happened to the von Trapps after they reached the United States?

They settled in Vermont

After arriving in the United States, the family toured as singers. In the early 1940s they settled in Stowe, Vermont, bought a farm and ran a music camp when they were not on tour. The Trapp Family Lodge opened to guests in 1950.

The touring group continued after the family stopped touring

The family stopped touring in 1955. By then, the singing group consisted mostly of people who were not family members. The von Trapps’ musical career therefore outlasted the close-knit family lineup portrayed on screen.

What is the best firsthand account?

Maria von Trapp’s The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, published in 1949, is the key firsthand account behind the adaptations. The National Archives recommends the memoir for readers who want Maria’s own account; the film and musical are better understood as dramatic interpretations than as precise histories.
