What is The Signal about?
Astronaut and scientist Paula returns to Earth after a mission aboard the International Space Station, but the passenger plane carrying her home vanishes over the Atlantic. Her husband, Sven, and daughter, Charlie, are left with a riddle Paula had prepared for them. Following its clues draws them into a mystery tied to something she encountered in space.

The story moves between the family’s investigation in Germany and Paula’s experiences on the ISS. What begins as a search for answers becomes a conspiracy: Hadi pressures Paula to disclose her calculations, while billionaire mission funder Benisha Mudhi has her own agenda concerning the discovery. Paula gives governments misleading coordinates because she fears they will destroy the object on its way to Earth. Charlie learns the real location through radio contact; Sven gets a missing date from Paula’s coded voicemail.

Paula’s “hello”
In orbit, Paula hears a repeated “hello” and concludes it may be a message from extraterrestrial life. When Hadi tries to force her to disclose her calculations, Paula secretly broadcasts their exchange. The story reveals that Mudhi is behind the effort to control first contact and the plot that leads to the deaths of Paula and Hadi.

The object is Voyager 1, not an alien craft
Sven and Charlie solve Paula’s clues and reach the true coordinates. What returns is Voyager 1, the NASA spacecraft launched in 1977, carrying the Golden Record: a phonograph record with greetings from Earth, wildlife sounds and music. The repeated “hello” is not an alien reply. TIME’s account of the finale explains it as a playback glitch repeating a portion of the record.
The plane’s disappearance is part of the tragedy surrounding the mystery: TIME reports that 178 people were killed when Paula and Hadi’s passenger plane vanished over the Atlantic. The finale then shifts from the question of who—or what—sent the signal to what people will do with the message they have received.
What the final news montage means
The closing montage frames the discovery as a test of whether people can overcome violence and division. A broadcaster says, “This event reminds us that a long time ago, we wanted to be something. That we had a common message.” The final line makes the point explicit: “The message that we received today didn’t come from a foreign planet or another civilization. It came from us. We know what we have to do. Something has to change.” The signal is human in origin; its significance lies in whether humanity can live up to the shared message preserved on the record.

The Signal is a limited series with four episodes. Netflix’s announcement described them as 60-minute episodes, while its title page gives these individual runtimes:

Netflix identifies the 2024 series as TV-MA. Its title page lists the episode runtimes above; the announcement’s “60-minute” description is approximate rather than an exact runtime for every episode.
