Showrunner Allan Heinberg said the adaptation was focused on Dream’s story and that, by 2022, the remaining Dream material was enough for one more season. He later said the series was expensive to make and that continuation depended on viewership making the investment financially worthwhile. The evidence points to both creative scope and economics—not one confirmed, exclusive cause.
Was The Sandman cancelled after two seasons?
Netflix’s series page lists The Sandman as a 2025 title with two seasons. On January 31, 2025, TVLine reported the announcement that the series would end after season two. That is the confirmed outcome; it is not evidence that two additional seasons had been ordered and then cancelled.

Netflix had confirmed a second season in a November 3, 2022 announcement, promising more episodes and stories from Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel. The announcement did not publicly commit the show to a particular number of seasons beyond that. Its description of “even more” stories was not a promise of two more seasons. Netflix’s 2022 announcement also quoted Gaiman saying that he, Heinberg, and David Goyer would bring more of the stories to life.
Why did the series end?
Heinberg’s public comments give two parts of the explanation: the adaptation’s intended story scope and the show’s financial demands. They do not disclose Netflix’s internal decision-making or establish that either factor alone determined the ending.

The adaptation was focused on Dream
In a statement reported by TVLine, Heinberg said: “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season.” In other words, the team’s assessment was about the Dream-centered narrative it had chosen to adapt—not every story set in the broader Sandman universe.
That statement supports the view that a third season was not needed to complete the planned Dream story. It does not prove that Netflix had ever formally planned two additional seasons.

Continuation also depended on audience and cost
In comments reported by Radio Times on July 31, 2025, Heinberg said, “It’s not an inexpensive show to make.” He added that he could continue if viewership demanded it and doing so made financial sense for Netflix. He also described the show’s appeal as “a bit more limited than those shows.” These are Heinberg’s remarks, not Netflix disclosures of the series’ budget, audience total, or a specific renewal threshold.
No verified budget figure or named viewership total accompanies those comments. The evidence therefore supports a qualitative conclusion: the expense of the production and the audience needed to justify it were considerations, but the public record does not reveal their precise weight in Netflix’s decision.

Was there enough source material for more seasons?
There is much more Sandman material than the series’ two-season count might suggest. Radio Times describes the comic run as 10 volumes and 75 issues, alongside spin-offs and prequels. That broader catalogue helps explain why readers might imagine a longer adaptation, but the amount of source material available and the amount the show planned to use for Dream’s story are different questions.
Heinberg’s explanation was that the remaining Dream-focused material the team considered in 2022 was enough for one more season. The comics’ wider universe could support other stories in principle, but the cited statements do not establish that Netflix had committed to adapting them as additional seasons of this series.

Did allegations involving Neil Gaiman cause the ending?
The public statements cited here do not establish whether allegations involving Gaiman played an internal role in the decision, nor do they establish that the allegations had no effect. It would be inaccurate to present either conclusion as confirmed. Heinberg’s publicly reported explanation addresses the adaptation’s Dream-centered scope, production expense, and the viewership needed to make continuation financially viable.
