Spoilers for Episode 4, “The Commoner.” The episode’s Hitchcockian quality is an interpretation, not a documented influence or an objective anime ranking. Its case rests on a sharp suspense reversal: after Nice reaches the top ten, God Eye reveals that Moon’s death was staged, and Lin Ling risks everything in an attempt to save her.
What happens in Episode 4?
“The Commoner” pivots from a public milestone to a personal crisis. The official synopsis says Nice makes the top ten, only for the news that Moon’s death was staged to cut short his joy. Lin Ling then takes a gamble to turn events around. Crunchyroll’s episode listing describes Nice facing God Eye to save Moon.
The plot’s force comes from the reversal: what appeared to be a death is reinterpreted as a deception, changing what Lin Ling knows and what he must do. The episode doesn’t simply add a new danger; it makes the apparent ending of Moon’s story into the source of a more urgent predicament.
Why the reveal feels Hitchcockian
Calling this the “most Hitchcockian twist in the history of anime” works as critical framing, not as a verifiable ranking. The comparison is useful when it describes the scene’s suspense mechanics: the audience is given an apparent reality, then a revelation forces that reality to be reconsidered. Deception and reversal put the character’s next decision under pressure.

Here, the stakes are unusually well aligned. Lin Ling is trying to save Moon, while his public identity as Nice has just gained a top-ten position. In To Be Hero X, public trust is not merely a popularity measure: it helps determine a hero’s power and ranking. That premise makes public standing part of the episode’s tension rather than background decoration. The series description on Crunchyroll explains that a hero’s abilities depend on people’s belief.
That structure supports a Hitchcockian reading without claiming that Alfred Hitchcock influenced the episode. The available episode information confirms the staged-death reveal and Lin Ling’s gamble, but it does not establish a direct influence or substantiate a superlative across anime.

When did Episode 4 come out?
Release dates differ by listing and territory. Crunchyroll lists “The Commoner” as released on April 26, 2025. ORICON’s April 23 preview scheduled the Japanese broadcast for April 27 at 9:30 a.m. JST; its summary also identifies the staged-death reveal and Lin Ling’s gamble. These dates refer to different schedules, not necessarily a contradiction. ORICON’s episode preview gives the Japanese broadcast information.
