Tom Petty’s songs sometimes grew from real pressures and feelings, but he did not describe them all as autobiography. His own explanations offer a clearer picture: “American Girl” is about a character finding strength to move on, “Refugee” carried the anger of a record-contract fight, and “The Waiting” is an optimistic song about uncertain dreams. The distinction matters: a songwriter’s stated inspiration is not proof that every lyric records an event in his private life.

How to separate a song’s meaning from its biography

There are three different things listeners can mean when they ask what a Petty song is “about”: what Petty said inspired it, the story or speaker presented in the song, and an interpretation listeners bring to its imagery. The first can be documented through his interviews; the other two may remain open to debate.

Petty described a varied songwriting process. In a 1999 interview republished by The Petty Archives, he said, “Usually it’s the words that come after I have the melody.” He added that lyrics could sometimes be close to the bone and at other times so oblique that “you can’t tell what it is.” That is a useful caution against treating a first-person-sounding line as a verified entry from his life.

What is the meaning of “American Girl”?

Petty said the song began while he was living in an Encino apartment beside a freeway. The passing cars made him think of waves, and the writing quickly turned toward people wanting a different, better life. In a 2002 interview with the Los Angeles Times, he directly rejected the persistent claim that the girl dies by suicide: “A lot of people think the girl in the song commits suicide, but it’s not about suicide.” In Petty’s account, she looks for the strength to move on and finds it.

That statement clarifies Petty’s conception of the character; it does not require listeners to stop interpreting the song’s longing or setting in their own way. But the suicide claim should not be presented as the song’s confirmed plot.

What inspired “Refugee”?

Petty connected the song’s defiant emotional tone to a dispute over the band’s recording contract. ABC Records’ attempted sale of the band’s contract to MCA, which Petty said happened without the band’s knowledge, contributed to the anger surrounding the period. Looking back, he told the Los Angeles Times, “This was a reaction to the pressures of the music business.”

Petty also said he could later hear how that conflict helped shape the tone of Damn the Torpedoes. It is a documented influence he identified—not evidence that the song can only be understood as a literal account of the contract dispute.

What is “The Waiting” about?

Petty described “The Waiting” as optimistic: it concerns waiting for dreams without knowing whether they will come true. As he put it to the Los Angeles Times, “It’s about waiting for your dreams and not knowing if they will come true.” That explanation gives the song’s yearning an uncertain but hopeful frame; it does not establish that the lyrics document a particular episode of private despair.

Was Wildflowers about Petty’s personal life?

Petty’s account of writing the title song points to improvisation rather than a straightforward diary entry. In a 2003 interview, he described playing a simple chord pattern and improvising lyrics as the band’s rhythm took shape. That supports the idea that the song emerged spontaneously; it does not identify a specific biographical event behind its words.

The broader album period did coincide with personal turbulence. The Tom Petty estate’s official site presents the 1993–95 period covered by the documentary Somewhere You Feel Free as creatively significant and personally turbulent, including Petty’s first work with Rick Rubin. Wildflowers was released in November 1994; the official site describes the expanded 2020 release, Wildflowers & All the Rest, as revealing the project’s long-awaited second half. This context helps explain why listeners connect the album to Petty’s life, but it does not prove that any particular lyric directly records marital events or another specific private circumstance.

When Petty used metaphor rather than autobiography

Petty’s own comments show why a song’s subject should not automatically be mistaken for a literal account. Discussing The Last DJ, he said the record-business subject worked as a metaphor and that the whole album was not simply about the business. His explanations of “Refugee” and “The Waiting” likewise distinguish a real pressure or broad feeling from a claim that every line narrates a factual event.

The strongest readings therefore keep the levels separate: Petty’s interviews establish some inspirations and intentions; the songs supply characters, images, and narratives; later interpretations can add meaning but should be identified as interpretation rather than biography.
