Spoilers for the main Dream storyline and Season 2 finale. Dream ultimately dies in his war with the Kindly Ones. After granting his son Orpheus’s long-requested death, he knows the act will bring their vengeance. When the Furies threaten the Dreaming and refuse to stop until he is dead, Dream accepts the cost rather than let the suffering continue. Morpheus’s death gives way to Daniel becoming a different Dream—not a resurrection of the same person.
Why do the Kindly Ones come after Dream?
The conflict begins with Orpheus, Dream’s son. After a cult attack leaves him a living severed head, Orpheus spends millennia wanting to die. Dream has been unable to grant that request, in part because the Endless are forbidden to spill family blood. But after Orpheus helps Dream locate Destruction, he asks again for the boon of death. In Episode 6, “Family Blood,” Dream grants it.
The act breaks the prohibition against spilling family blood and brings the Kindly Ones—also called the Furies—after Dream. Netflix’s season-ending explainer describes the vengeance as the consequence of Dream killing his son. The Furies attack the Dreaming through Lyta Hall, putting its inhabitants and the realm itself in danger.
How does Dream die?
Dream confronts the Furies and asks them to stop harming those under his protection. They will not leave until their task is complete: his death. He sends Matthew to summon his sister Death, acknowledging the price of what he has done. He then takes her hand. The weather subsides and a bright light signals that Morpheus has died.
#1 Best Overall
Showrunner Allan Heinberg says Dream understands that granting Orpheus’s request will cost him his own life, but refuses to let his son suffer any longer. In the finale, Dream also chooses not to prolong the Furies’ attack on the people and place he cares for. His death is both the consequence of his act and his decision to end the harm to his realm.
Why does Dream accept his fate?
The series frames Dream’s choice as an act of love, rather than as a simple defeat in battle. He gives Orpheus the release he had asked for, despite the cost to himself, and then accepts that cost instead of allowing the Dreaming to remain under attack. Dream tells Death, “There is a price for what I have done, and I must pay it. I’m tired, my sister. I’m very tired.”
Rank #2
Heinberg describes the larger arc this way: “Dream learns to love and to be loved, and what love really means. But in doing so, he has to die and essentially be reborn in Daniel Hall, as a different Dream.” That is the showrunner’s reading of the story’s meaning; the plot itself establishes the chain from Orpheus’s death to the Furies’ vengeance and Morpheus’s end.
How does Daniel become the new Dream?
Daniel Hall’s unusual origin makes his succession possible. Netflix says he is the first and only human child conceived in the Dream Realm, after Lyta’s pregnancy became real through a dream. In Episode 8, Loki throws baby Daniel into a fire, burning away his humanity so he can become the new dream lord.

After Morpheus dies, Daniel transforms into an adult Dream, played by Jacob Anderson. He inherits the office and powers, but he is not Morpheus restored in another body. Daniel is a distinct successor: newly empowered, uncertain, and only beginning to learn the role and earn the trust of the Dreaming’s residents. Lucienne and Matthew grieve Morpheus and are initially unsure about accepting Daniel.
What happens in the final episode?
Episode 11, “A Tale of Graceful Ends,” serves as the farewell to Morpheus. His siblings and important figures from his life attend his funeral. The closing scenes follow Daniel as he begins his new role, ending with him meeting his siblings over a family dinner.
The main finale is separate from Episode 12, “Death: The High Cost of Living,” which Netflix lists as a bonus chapter focused on Death. Netflix’s episode guide gives the Season 2 release schedule: six Volume 1 episodes released July 3, 2025; five Volume 2 episodes released July 24, 2025; and the bonus episode released July 31, 2025. These are the original release dates, not a guarantee of current catalog availability.

Netflix says the season draws on several parts of the comics, including Season of Mists, Brief Lives, The Kindly Ones, and The Sandman: Overture, as well as stories such as “The Song of Orpheus” and “The Tempest.” DC’s description of The Sandman Vol. 9: The Kindly Ones 30th Anniversary Edition likewise identifies Morpheus’s pursuit by the Furies after family blood is spilled. That shared premise makes the volume a useful comparison, but it does not mean every television adaptation detail is identical.
Best Value
Heinberg has said the series was focused on Dream’s story and that, when the remaining Dream material was assessed in 2022, there was enough for one more season. The finale therefore closes Morpheus’s story while leaving the Dreaming with a new Lord to continue in a changed form.
