The Sand Castle is a fictional Arabic-language thriller about a family sheltering in a lighthouse on an island in the Mediterranean while they wait to be rescued. Directed and co-written by Matty Brown, the film uses the young daughter Jana’s perspective to blur survival drama with psychological unease and allegory. It is not based on a book or a true story.
What is The Sand Castle about?
Jana and her family live in a lighthouse on a small, uninhabited Mediterranean island as they wait for friends to come for them. At first, the reasons they are stranded there are unclear. As the adults become increasingly desperate to leave, Jana’s daydreams grow more elaborate, and the story moves between the family’s immediate struggle and her imaginative view of it.
The film also brings the migration crisis into the family’s isolated world: a body bag washes ashore, and a radio report refers to migrants drowning between Greece and Turkey. These details give the survival story a wider political and human context without turning the film into a documentary account.
Is The Sand Castle based on a true story or a book?
No. Netflix Tudum describes it as an original screenplay, and the story is fictional rather than an adaptation of a book or a documented true story. Its references to migration are part of the film’s narrative; they should not be mistaken for independently reported statistics. Netflix Tudum’s film explainer identifies the premise and answers these questions.

Where does the film take place?
The family’s refuge is a lighthouse on an uninhabited island somewhere off Greece and Turkey, according to Netflix Tudum. The sources do not identify a specific island or country as the family’s exact location. The setting’s isolation keeps the focus on the family while placing the story near a major migration route.

Is The Sand Castle a documentary?
No. Despite its migration-related subject matter, it is a fictional thriller, not a documentary. Its child-centered perspective and increasingly complex daydreams shape how events are presented, while the island setting and family’s wait for rescue supply the survival-drama framework.

How was the film received?
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 65% Tomatometer based on five critic reviews when its page was accessed in 2026. That is a small sample, and the score can change as reviews are added; it is a snapshot, not a broad or settled critical consensus. The listed runtime is 1 hour 38 minutes. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page shows the aggregate and review excerpts.
The sampled critics differ in their assessment. Glenn Kenny of RogerEbert.com reads the stranded family as an allegory, describing the characters as “stranded outside of historical time.” Razmig Bedirian of The National, by contrast, found the experience suffocating and the film’s intent faint by the end. Those responses point to a useful expectation: the movie leans on ambiguity and psychological storytelling rather than offering a straightforward survival plot.
