In Udita Jhunjhunwala’s May 9, 2025 review for Scroll.in, the Netflix series’ Rajasthan setting and Ishaan Khatter’s performance stand out, but pedestrian plotting and unconvincing lead chemistry keep the show from fully delivering on its premise.
What is The Royals about?
This eight-episode Hindi drama is set in fictional Morpur, Rajasthan. Aviraaj “Fizzy” Singh (Ishaan Khatter), a playboy and model, returns home for the reading of his father’s will and finds his family’s royal estate—and the lifestyle attached to it—in financial decline. Sofia (Bhumi Pednekar), a successful co-founder of a hospitality startup, proposes a way to monetize the family’s heritage: let ordinary customers experience royal life. A business arrangement draws the two into a romance.
The setup gives the show two linked stories to work with: whether a royal household can adapt to economic reality, and whether a polished business partnership can become a convincing love story. Jhunjhunwala sees potential in that combination, but argues that the writing does not make enough of it.
Who made the series, and who stars in it?
Scroll.in’s review credits Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy as creators, with Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana directing. The writers named are Neha Veena Sharma, Vishnu Sinha, and Iti Agarwal.

What works—and what does not?
The premise has promise, but the script feels familiar
Jhunjhunwala describes the “royal falls for commoner” setup as familiar, though potentially effective. Her main reservation is that the series does not consistently develop its ideas. She finds the plotting pedestrian and the treatment of workplace gender politics, inheritance, and women’s agency shallow. These are the reviewer’s assessments, rather than claims about audience consensus.
The romance does not consistently catch fire
The central relationship depends on the pull between Aviraaj and Sofia, but the review finds their chemistry unconvincing for much of the run. Jhunjhunwala argues that a show built on a classic romance needs both strong lead chemistry and a script capable of renewing familiar themes. In her view, The Royals does not reliably supply either.

Khatter gives the drama emotional weight
The review’s strongest performance praise goes to Khatter. Jhunjhunwala says he brings emotional depth and conviction to Aviraaj, particularly in scenes involving his place in the family, his father, and his relationships. She also notes selected casting choices and a later sibling-bonding scene as strengths.
The setting is a strength; some costumes distract
The Rajasthan setting and production spectacle give the series visual appeal, according to the review. Jhunjhunwala is less persuaded by some of the modern costume choices. The result, in her assessment, is a show that can look polished without always making its characters or ideas feel equally well realized.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is The Royals worth watching?
Consider it if a contemporary royal setting, glossy production, or Ishaan Khatter’s performance is your main draw. If you need a sharply written romance with consistently compelling chemistry, Jhunjhunwala’s review suggests the series may disappoint. Its central business-and-royalty idea is more enticing than the execution she describes.
