It is based on Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through. The film is a Spain-produced drama with a 107-minute running time.
What is The Room Next Door about?
Ingrid and Martha once worked at the same magazine, but lost touch over the years. Ingrid became an autofiction novelist; Martha became a war reporter. When they reconnect, they find themselves in what the Venice Biennale’s official synopsis calls “an extreme but strangely sweet situation.” That outline establishes the film’s reunion and emotional premise without giving away further plot details.
Almodóvar wrote and directed the film. He described it as his first feature film in English in his statement for the 2024 Venice Biennale. Although it is a fictional feature rather than a documentary, its focus on friendship, illness, and difficult personal choices may interest viewers drawn to intimate, character-led stories.
Is the film based on a book?
Yes. The film is based on Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Are You Going Through. The festival credits identify the novel as the source; that credit does not establish a scene-for-scene adaptation. Read La Biennale di Venezia’s film listing for the official source and film details.
