Roblox announced the return of its familiar “oof” sound on July 18, 2025, nearly three years after removing it over a licensing issue. The company has not disclosed the terms of the arrangement that brought it back, so the announcement does not establish who owns the sound or where else creators may use it.
Why Roblox removed the “oof” sound
In July 2022, Roblox removed the sound and introduced a replacement default sound. The company’s explanation, quoted at the time by Windows Central, was: “Related to sounds, due to a licensing issue, we have removed the ‘oof’ sound from Roblox and have created a replacement default sound which launches today.” Roblox identified a licensing issue, but that statement did not spell out the dispute’s legal details.
What Roblox said about the earlier dispute
In a January 11, 2020 forum post, Roblox said its founders, Erik and David, obtained the sound along with the platform’s original sounds from a stock sound CD-ROM of licensed, copyright-free sounds. The company also said Tommy Tallarico had not provided proof of ownership to Roblox in response to its requests. The sound has also been associated with the 2000 game Messiah, and later accounts discuss attribution involving Tallarico and Joey Kuras. Those references do not resolve who created or owns the sound. Credits, metadata, Roblox’s account and individuals’ claims should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.

When the sound came back
On July 18, 2025, Roblox announced the sound’s return with the line “A comeback so good it hurts.” The announcement marked its return nearly three years after the 2022 removal. Windows Central reported that the exact terms of the new arrangement were unclear; the report did not establish a payment, royalty structure, ownership transfer or license scope. Can creators use the official sound in their games?
Roblox Creator Hub currently lists an asset called “Official OOF Sound Effect,” asset ID 79348298352567. View the Creator Hub listing. The listing information available here does not show detailed license terms, so its presence alone is not proof of unrestricted use, permission to use it outside Roblox, or identical rights for every creator or territory.

Before using the asset, check the current terms displayed in Creator Hub and any applicable Roblox rules. If you need to use the sound outside Roblox or in a context with commercial or distribution requirements, do not assume the asset listing grants that permission; seek terms that expressly cover your use.
